Much has been said about Mercer's Enrollment advantage, but...

The big question is where is that magical number of diminishing returns. I don't know the exact number and I don't think anyone here does.

Historically (see post above), that number for 4A appears to be 800 boys or more in the school.

** Well thought-out analysis, by the way! Only thing I might differ with is that whatever the "diminishing return" is of having "more than enough" to play at each position it isn't nearly as negative as not having that CAPABLE BACK-UP when that critical injury to one or more of your key players happens...which, in a COLLISION-SPORT that extends more than 15 weeks is almost inevitable.

I agree. Most people don't remember a Rockcastle team a couple of years before Coach Larkey came to the Rock. A very good football team that won the district over Bell and a very good Cawood team at the time. The Rock had a very good running back by the name of Scottie Robinson who was nip and tuck with Mark Higgs as the rushing leader all year. First round of the playoffs the Rock hosted Danville at home only to have a 3 year starter as the QB go down to an injury very early in the game. Season over!!!!! It may have been the best chance at beating Danville the Rock has had.

Thank you all for this thread and the intelligent discussion posted. :thumb:

The best way I know how to describe the merge and the effect on this years football team is with these three facts.

1. Mercer Co. was 10-2 last year and lost to a superior Russell team.

2. Mercer returned a good portion of those same players and were primed to make some noise with or without the merge.

3. Mercer absorbed 200 students.....total.

Anyway, I for one appreciate the posts and courtesy in these posts.

This to me shows how irrelevant the consolidation is...only 200 students.....that doesn't seem to be a great advantage.

However, this is a comment easily made by a 1A WKY football fan who hasn't seen them play........ nor do i know how many actual players are from Harrodsburg and how effective they are.......I might have stronger feelings if my team was in their district.....

It's hardly irrelevant.

According to the KHSAA enrollment figures, Mercer County's enrollment last year was 717 students. Harrodsburg's was 239.

With the consolidation, Mercer's enrollment jumped by a third.

Wish the Mercerburg all the luck and hope the Red Devils get to defend there AA State Champions aganst them. Question, Do both these schools combine all sports, basketball, baseball, softball etc... this year or just football ??????:fire: :fire: :fire:

All sports, soccer, volleyball, golf, etc. even BAND, they even combined the little league sports program for the younger ones to play football and cheerleaders together. :ylsuper:

forget about it .. let's just play football and may the best team win ....

ps .. bring the Scottie

We're bringing our sword. You mind if we bring our cannon?

Mercer also has the advantage of fielding a team with experienced players from two different programs.

That is the key.:thumb:

That's pretty obvious as to being one of the biggest advantages. But, still these guys were bitter rivals last year and have been playing together for about 4 months. Hats off to the coaching staff for what they've done so far. I don't care how many guys you have on that sideline. You still have to execute. The coaching staff in my mind has been a big key as well. Now the battles begin.
