Russell is probably the most balanced of the three. The passing game has really come along. I think Russell and Mercer are both better defensively than Western.

 

I wouldn't count out Belfry of Sheldon Clark either.

Winning a state championship takes many things to happen and one is a lot of luck when you need it. I know of at least 8 plays in the playoffs that would have eliminated Russell from being the state champ. These plays went Russells way and they won. Now with a team that has more tallent and better players you may not have to be so lucky. Let's face it last year Russell had no D-1 players on thier team. No one was a superstar (exclude Clarke). These kids just played together and made it happen. Now in 2002 I know of 7 plays in the Breathitt game that if anyone of them would have gone Russells way they would have won that game. With Breathitt beating Corbin 50 something to 0 I think Russell would have won. Lots of luck is needed when you are playing teams that are commenserate.

 

Now why I say Mercer will win it all. They have some very talented players across the board. They have several players that are very fast. No I did not believe that 3.31 and 3.32 and 3.33, 40 times that someone posted on here but I do believe they are fast enough. I think that Mercer stands alone at the top for obvious reasons that need not be discussed any further. I like the community support and understand the excitement. Good luck.

 

Russell will have to play better defense and get some players healthy if they are going to make it very far into the post season. I think both of those things will happen and with some luck who knows maybe Russell will be in Louisville. I sure hope so because I love the Red Devils and feel they have a great coaching staff.

As I have stated before, I think that Mercer Co. will win the 2A State Championship.

Middlesboro would likely have to go to Belfry AND Russell and win to get to Louisville. If they don't learn to play defense they have no shot...

Mercer is a no-brainer decision to predict to win the state title.... but.. IMO there are about 6 or 7 teams who may have the ability to "upset" them.
