Newport rehires Matt Schmitz as Head Football Coach

Featured Replies

Anyone who knows the real story as to what happened that night knows that Matt got a raw deal to begin with. A lot more to it than what was said in the media.

Great hire and happy for Matt.

Do share, were you there? Or did you hear it from someone like we did? Always 2 sides to the story and neither one is always 100% accurate.

I agree people deserve second chances. But he admits he was wrong and owned up to it, so why did he get a raw deal as you put it? It sounds like he got a great deal with the plea bargain. You resist arrest and nothing good about that. I am happy he gets to coach again, will there be lots of administrative oversight of his behavior away from school? Let's hope so and and that he has learned a hard lesson for the better of everyone around him.

I think it's a bad idea...period. A head football coach is VERY influential to those he coaches...the influence can be positive or negative. I'm not sure I would want my son playing for a person who has a record like that.

I understand the concern by some in the community. However, the man has paid his debts to society and is still a role model for many of the kids in the community. He made a mistake, did what he needed to do to correct the mistake, and is able to move on with a second chance. I believe that many of us have and will benefit from that premise at some point in our lives. He can stand up in front of the kids and tell them to do what is right, because if not this is what will happen (loss of employment, etc.). However, mistakes happen and you can get back up off of the ground and do what you need to correct mistakes and reestablish trust, etc and things can work themselves out again---a valuable life lesson for many kids that get knocked down for various reasons on a daily basis.

Getting caught smoking dope, getting a PI and whatever "resisting arrest" actually was.....yeah, doesn't bother me. Glad they are giving they man a second chance.

Glass houses.

Thank you! I would just like to see us reward people who do the right thing and obey the law. There are several good coaches out there waiting for their shot who have done things the RIGHT way but the school feels the need to retread this guy. I get what people are saying about him teaching the kids about second chances but there is a lot to be said about making the most of the opportunities your given in the first place. If I had a child in this school system I would be upset, I expect our educators and coaches to be held to a higher standard and I won't apologize for that.

If I am honest, I would not be happy if my kid played there. I think he needs a few more years of staying out of trouble before he is put in charge of leading young men.

I do not know him or the situation at all. I am speaking on terms of general principle.

Isnt he already in the school teaching? If so whats the difference in teaching during school and after?

I wouldn't be happy about that either... but being a HC leading young men (remember football is about a lot more than sport as we are so often told) is another step up the rung of the ladder of leadership. A HC has much more influence than most who are "teachers only" and so, there is more expected and more accountability. This is my opinion. No one has to agree and obviously, those in charge of hiring at Newport disagree.

I wish the man well and I genuinely hope he has much success in all areas of his life.

I disagree. A teacher has a much larger range of influence than a football coach. A coach's influence is limited to those that play for them, whereas a teacher will be in contact with a far greater number of individuals.

I have no issue with it. Resisting arrest is really the only charge that bothers me, and he's paid the price for that IMO.

I think it is risky. I hope he does well. Imagine the trouble Newport would be in though if something like this happened again!!

Like the Spanish teacher? Or the band teacher? I don't think so.

I think a football coach spends a lot more hours with his players in a more personal relationship than a lot of teachers do their students? summer practice, double sessions, 3 hour practices, bus rides, conditioning, celebrating victories, suffering defeats.

So can anyone answer my earlier question? was he brought back just as a football coach or does he have a teaching gig as well?

Any indications yet who will be on his staff? Im sure if nothing else he will have Coach McDay on his staff, but who else?

He was hired before the school year.
