Tyler Owens- Birds D-Lineman.....underrated?

Featured Replies

Tyler is an undersized D-lineman who is very strong, deceptively quick and very aggressive. How many of you think he is one of the most underrated D-lineman in NKY? I certainly do.

What is his size and what grade is he in? What are his defensive stats for the season?

I would say he is 5-10 and maybe 175lbs.....Highlands prides itself on quick D-lineman...its evident with their current d- line in Kidwell, Owens and Ashton. All of these guys are not your typical 6-4 250lb D-linemen.

I don't know his stats, maybe Lneck can break down the films and give us those:thumb:

He seems to be in on a lot of plays....although...all Birds seem to be in on a lot of plays as they do a heckuva lot of gangtackling in Fort Thomas.

So what makes you think he is underrated?

Probably because he hasnt necessarily been a household name for the Birds until this season (Sr. year). He has come up through the ranks, played JV, practiced hard and finally cracked the starting lineup. He doesnt get the recognition like many bigger kids around the state who are probably being recruited. A kid like him....with his aggressiveness and tenacity...undersized or not... I may take a chance on him at a small college and shift him to OLB or something.

I have not watched this kid play but if he is the player you say he is and he has done his work in the classroom as well, he may get his chance at the next level if it is his wish to do so. Players like this are very valuable to a team as their attitude and work ethic seem to catch on with the other players.

If you do not mind me asking, is it his goal to play at the next level? You can PM me if you wish!!

I was very impressed by Highlands entire defense when I saw them play this year. Undersized but they all can run and as a team they swarm the ball nicely.

A power running game with a big line (St. X) would be the best bet to try and win against the Highlands defense this year. You also need to have a good defense yourself or you will never get the Highlands offense off the field.

The fact that a thread has been started just on this kid, tells me he is probably not over rated. The state is full of undersized lineman who make plays, some of them make plays with a lot less around them than this young man at highlands.

Yeah you might be right, but not against the type of competiton he has faced this year...HHS has played a very tough schedule...

Point taken, however why not start a thread on an exceptional talent who is undersized and who has faced extremely tough competition in Elder, St.X, Columbus DeSales, etc.... and is usually outweighed by 75 lbs each time out. Why not focus on the kid who plays for probably the best 3A team in the state. Why not?

IF you want to start a thread on a kid who plays for a 3-5 Class AA team who plays lesser competition.... so be it.

Tyler is indeed everything you say he is. But why single him out? There are a plethora of players on the Birds squad (and a lot of teams) that fit this description. This is what makes high school sports special. Most teams are not loaded with all-state candidates, but like HHS have these kids that work their tail ends off year round to overachieve in the sport. Should they all get recognition? Maybe. Do they want it. I doubt it. I'd say all they want is to win football games. Go Birds

Nothing wrong IMO with him wanting to single this kid out as you say. I have never heard about this player but I enjoyed reading the comments about his dedication & style of play. Now that he has been mentioned I as well as many others know a little about him so the exposure is a good thing as long as it proposed with class and for the good of the athlete being mentioned.

Its not a slight to anyone else or discount the efforts of kids all over the state who fit Tyler's description Crunch, its an analysis of a player and that is all.

No, really its so I can increase the number of posts :D

No need for any other Birds to get their feather's ruffled. :thumb:
