Tuition Athletes in NKY

In another thread you brought up that Beechwood would not be getting the same type athletes any more due to the coaching change, could be true but the program speaks for itself and the athletes will still come if there parents want to PAY the tuition. Beechwood gets accused of recruiting every yr but there is no recruiting going on. Parents want their children to be successful and get a great education, so they pay the tuition and go to Beechwood.

My remarks about the kids from across the river was never answered. I have been told by very good sources that the Principle stopped this from happening a few yrs ago. The kids that were already enrolled would be allowed to stay but they would not take any more, this would be the SR on this yrs team. I think w/the new KHSAA rules this would not be allowed any way, that is, they could not compete in any athletics coming from across the river.

I do not have a problem w/kids attending a school from out of district(in state) as long as the financial end of things are met, meaning pay the tuition. Beechwood tuition students have no way to offset the cost of their tuition where at the Catholic school they do. Therefore, if a student wants to participate in any extra-curricular activity the family should be responsible for the full tuition or not participate.

It amazes me that any time a public school athlete transfers to a Catholic school, the public school usually releases that student. When a Catholic school athlete transfers to a public school it goes to court. I am Catholic but my child attends a public school.

Shine some light on this and correct me if I am wrong and I will admit I am wrong.

I hope this is not against the rules. I don't think it is but if it is I apologize it was brought up in another thread that was off the subject so STOP this if I am not allowed to discuss this.

Discussion of tuition paying students / out of district students / out of state students is fine as long as there are no recruiting allegations being thrown about (or even hinted at).

So everyone be careful how you respond in this thread and keep it on topic and don't try and be clever, and at the end of the day we will all be happy. :thumb:

1. Holy Cross has OH kids participating in sports that are not seniors.

2. There is no rule in place now that prevents a kid from OH playing for a KY school. It did not pass when it was last proposed.

3. The KHSAA decides whether they want to pursue transfers cases.

What are you asking / proposing?

The only thing I could see is that you want private school parents to be responsible for full tuition at a private school in order to participate in sports?

If that is correct, would it matter that a parent paying 80% of the tuition at Trinity and receiving 20% tuition assistance would probably be paying much more per year than a Beechwood parent paying full out of ditrict tuition?

And I think you might be a tad off in the Public to Catholic and Catholic to Public court cases. The most notable cases I can remember in the Greater Cincinnati area involve students transferring from Public to Public or from Catholic to Catholic schools.

Trinity's tuition has nothing to do w/this. You hit the nail on the head. If you want your child to attend another school that is out of district then you should be responsible to pay the full tuition and no so-called scholarships come into play. If you can't afford the tuition then stay put where you belong but don't take a free ride off someone else. What about the families who do pay the full tuition and have kids playing(sitting on the bench) and the scholarship kids are playing? I know this does not sit well w/the HC community.

If there are no SR's then I guess my question would be are there any Freshman from OH this yr? If not, then the Principle stuck to his guns and did not allow any more students/athletes from OH to come to HC.

I will check again, but I thought one of the new rules put in for next yr was something about out of state players which came about because of some of the Louis schools. Please correct me if I am wrong, anyone!!

No child should have to be educated in a school that is not of their choice. Period. Secondly, as long as a Private school gives aid to ALL kids that need it and not just athletes then there is no problem. Its their mission. I know of no child at any Catholic school that pays nothing. I think its actually capped at 50% aid at most schools. In additon, those students then do work-study. Ask any player at CCH who is on work-study if they truly have to work. The answer is "yes" because I've seen them emptying trash, etc.

In regards to families who pay the full tuition and their child sits. Simple: Either accept it, have your child improve, or find another opportunity for your child if its that important to you.

I've corrected you once already. It did not pass .

It may be on Wilson Sears' agenda for future meetings but as of today, its not there.

Gee 3ptshotter, I am confused. Seems to me that a kid who goes to Beechwood gets to bring their current county school system money to Beechwood (even those who live outside of Beechwoods school district in Kenton) and yes, then pay a little tutition to attend Beechwood. No problem at all, but do you call the money (lets say Boone) sends to Beechwood scholarship money? Seems to me there was a thread that showed the number of schools that Boone County sent money to for their kids, and I was certain Beechwood had some on it....

I do not have all the information on this subject, but as a Holy Cross parent, my youngest son was blessed to receive a partial, 4 year academic scholarship to Holy Cross High School. It had nothing to do with his athletic skill. He qualified with grades, teacher recommendations, and an essay. Even with this scholarship, I pay more in tuition than out of district students at Beechwood. All the parents I know at Holy Cross send their children for reasons other than sports. It is academically a wonderful high school, and my husband and I chose to send our children to Catholic Schools for the spiritual atmosphere. Although my children play sports at Holy Cross, they will not make a living off of sports. I do believe, however, the education they receive from Holy Cross will give them the foundation they need for a productive future.

About students coming from Ohio to play in Kentucky. If we measure mile for mile, I would bet there are children at other schools traveling further to their out of district school, than the students from Ohio would travel to Holy Cross. So, are you saying that because they drive across a river to come to school it should not be allowed? Seems a little silly to me.

Just my opinion.

Bad subject oldguy because I know too well about this. As for the county money, the county does not have to release that money as is the case in the Campbell County School System. If that money is not released the tuition is then doubled. Campbell Co will not release this state money, ask the Menetry family about that one.

cshs81, I agree, no child should be educated in a school not of their choice but pay the price to go somewhere else. If you can't afford it, too bad, stay where you are. Like you said, if you aren't happy find something else. Should I be penalized because I have a job and can afford the full tuition. Why can't that kid be put on the work program? I personally would not be picking up trash, cleaning classrooms or gyms so my kid could attend the catholic school.

The private schools have always had the adv. They can draw from anywhere. The state of KY in general is screwed up when it comes to edu. Think about this one: if I live in Kenton Co I can send my kid to any of the three schools as long as I don't require bus service, OPEN enrollment, Boone and Campbell are not like that you have to live in that certain school district. Now, how messed up is that.

Bottom line, I think you should be able to send your kid where ever you want free of charge if you live in that schools boundaries. If you live outside the boundaries then there is a fee but a fee that is the same for all schools, public or private. The private schools should abide by all state rules and be given state funding also just like the public schools. This way there are no recruiting violations, no work programs and everyone should be happy. If a student athlete would transfer after their freshman yr, they sit for one full yr in all extr-curricular activities. Far fetched I know but wouldn't this make things easier on everyone involved?

Everyone is bringing up cost, this is not the issue comparing BHS tuition to anyone else's. You made the decision to send your kids the private school and that is great. I don't doubt they will get a wonderful edu. The out of state thing is a sore subject. Do you know our kids can't go to OH and play any more, it is called "the Moeller rule!" So, why should we allow kids from OH to play in KY?

I seem to remember a standout lineman from Beechwood about 8-10 years ago who made the trip into Ft. Mitchell every day from Cincinnati. I agree kids from other states should not be allowed to play here. It just seems a little like the pot calling the kettle black to hear it coming from Beechwood.

I would love to know who this player was?

Where to start?

First, I respect that this is your opinion. I simply disagree with some of it.

You cannot have the state telling individual school systems what kids they can accept and which ones they cannot. That's up to the community. As long as the rules are consistent within a school district, then no one should have any right to tell that school system what they can and cannot do. When it comes to private schools, they, too, should have the right to take kids as long as they are consistent. I can't speak for all private schools but the Catholic school tradition is not exclusively for the haves. It prides itself on educating any and all that seek their education. So, if a parent chooses to send their child to school there and the school offers them a discounted rate in exchange for some labor, that's fine with me. The child should feel like they have to contribute.

You say you would personally not be doing such work simply for a Catholic education. Fortunately for you, no one is going to make you receive a Catholic eduation.

Many school districts can draw from anywhere. Some simply choose not to for various reasons. I assume Boone doesn't allow it simply because they are already overextended. Again, that's the choice of an individual district.

Fee the same for all schools - public and private? You're way out there on that one.

Are you really suggesting that private schools should receive state funding?

Ohio students: I have no problem with allowing OH students to attend AND participate in sports at NKY schools. As I've said, as long as they pay the same fee as any other non-district student, what's the harm?

We finally agree on something, you have your opinion and I have mine.

Anyway, why am I way out there on the fee thing. If all schools fell under state rule and all recieved state funding equally, then each school could charge the same amount of tuition for out of district kids. Bottom line is that every school would have to have a boundary from where they could draw from. Anyone outside that boundary would have to pay the fee.

Private schools would be a thing in the past. They couldn't recieve state funding the way things are done now.

The out of state thing I guess is a tax thing to me. The people in KY are not paying taxes for the kids in OH to come to KY to go to school and play athletics. As I said, we can't go to OH and play and still live here in KY.

jdg937, who is the OH kid that played at BHS. I have been involved w/the athletic program since '74 and do not know of any players from OH. Refresh my memory please.

BHS has had numerous great athletes from outside the Ft Mitchell area and probably would not have all the state championship trophy's w/out those players. However, they all paid the same amt of money to attend BHS and they all recieved a very good education.

I'm really not sure why it is a tax thing about Ohio students coming to Holy Cross or any other private school. As far as I am aware, private schools are not receiving your tax dollars anyway, even though we are paying equal amount of school taxes as you are. All public school systems would be in a panic if all of the students in private schools in Kenton County suddenly decided to enroll in public schools.

Sending our children to a private school is our choice, but remember, we are paying the same school tax as you are and our children are paying tuition to private schools. I don't even mind paying for public schools, but it would be nice if our tuition was tax deductible.
