Last night...

With a 15min running clock do the following:

First 9 min AMRAP

15 Toes to Bar

10 Deadlifts - 115#s

5 Snatch - 115#s

Followed immediately by 6 mins to find your 1RM of Clean & Jerk

This was a Crossfit Open workout from a 2015. I came up short on both parts compared to when I did it then.

Backsquat - doubles every 2 mins for 16 mins, build to a heavy set. Hit 235 on my last set.

Followed by:

100 Cal Row

75 Wall Balls

50 Pushups

25 Dumbbell Snatch

My workout yesterday (or today for that matter) was nothing special; however, I did up my one rep max on a squat clean to 225. That was a lot of weight for me and I was pleased.

That's a lot of weight for a lot of people. I wouldn't even dream of trying to catch 225 right now.

Today is BJJ at noon

Deadlift 295 x5

KB Strength conditioning circuit tonight at home.

I completely misread that originally. I read it as squat, missed the clean part. That's a nice lift. 225 was always my goal of a squat clean. May make another run at this year. Currently sitting at 195. I can clean 205 but just can't quite catch it in the bottom, always lose it forward.

Thanks. When I walk in the box, I am not good at much, so I have to be happy when I have a little success. :D I have 5 years until I turn 55 and then the scaled workouts in the open get quite a bit easier for me.

The way the open has been trending is disappointing. It use to be light and all about engine. It's progressively gotten heavier and I fear that will continue. My goal at this point to complete the workouts RX. If a time comes I have to do any of the with the scaled option I won't sign up any more. I also don't like Castro changing the burpee standard. Just makes no sense and seems pointless given the fact that kipping pullups and hspu's are still allowed.

I understand, but I do the open mainly for the community aspect of it. My wife does it, my daughter does it, so I want to be able to join in with them to talk about it. Not to mention everyone at the gym does it and then there is being part of the global event, which appeal to me.

The burpee standard wasn't a big deal to me, because I never did them any other way, but I am sure Castro just made it more difficult for some people at my end of the foodchain. The dumbbell snatch standard won't impact me either (I was switching hands mid chest on way back to floor anyway).

I get the community aspect of it and enjoy it as well. In the end i'll probably keep signing up, just too dang competitive.

With the burpees I changed the way I did them the last year and started stepping up. It's not as fast but if you have high volumes to do I can pace them better. It's also easier on the lower back. The snatch I don't switch in the air so it won't affect me. Again, it's a pacing thing. I tend to go out too hot so I try to use little things as cues to pace better.

Castro is my MAIN problem w/ Crossfit. Him and Glassman. Their arrogance makes me not want to ever contribute a dime to their empire.

I don't mind Castro. He can be jack donkey but I think overall he does an awesome job with the games. He's just comes off as not much of people person and arrogant. He's an ex navy seal so I guess it comes with the territory.

Glassman is passionate about his business and has become more and more involved in what he considers health causes. He's stays enough out of the foreground of Crossfit anymore that I really never give him a thought. I read his stuff from time to time but other than that...

Given the workouts you are doing, it looks like Crossfit would be right in your sweet spot.

I know very little about Castro, but I will say I really enjoy the Thursday night show where they reveal the workout and Castro's personality is a big part of it. It is like he is revealing our weekly punishment with an arrogant smile on his face the whole time.

I like the intensity of Crossfit. People who do it right are in incredible conditioning. I just don't like the different workout every day. I like to train towards some goal, whether strength goal, jiu jitsu, whatever. I know that a lot of people are the complete opposite and love the constant variation and challenge. I just don't work well that way.

I can agree with that. If your overall goal is just general fitness with some strength improvement Crossfit will work great. If you have a specific goal you want to achieve Crossfit may not be the right fit, at least not in the core sense of Crossfit. If you want to greatly improve your strength...squat, deadlift, press, bench, ect...you have to focus on a strength program. You can tailor a Crossfit program around that for condition but your number one focus has to be strength. Going to a box every day and doing their WOD isn't going to get you where you want to go.

To be honest most of the elite Crossfit competitors don't really do Crossfit in truest sense. Even the regional level athletes follow programming that makes them better at what will most likely be tested at the regional level. There's a reason pretty much no regional athlete I can think of follows main site programming. It will get you fitter and stronger but it won't make a top level competitor.

But when talking about true Crossfit what most don't understand or just don't realize, it's not just working out. A huge component of true Crossfit is nutrition. So it's not just about getting fitter but about getting fitter and healthier.
