AverageJoesGym
...and the rich get richer! While he Martinez signing is a big contact the Red Sox roster has mainly been built through the draft and trades.
Just Hangin Around
That is true but there are still a lot of clubs that CAN'T sign someone to that kind of contract due to finances. Only a handful of teams can afford that kind of contract.

Just Hangin Around
Like the Reds with Votto... Don't even try to compare the Red's $100m team salary with the Red Sox $200m. We both know that the two markets are totally different. The Red's couldn't afford Votto at the time they signed him but he has more than proven that he is worth what he gets in today's market. He is a bargain at $25m for the next few years at least. Homer Bailey and Devin Mesoraco are the albatrosses on the Reds for this season and then hopefully out of here. AverageJoesGym
Votto is worth every penny they're paying him and then some. Didn't say he wasn't. I was just pointing out that the Reds had a contact worth significantly more than Martinez contract. JHA said that not a lot of teams could afford a contract like that. The Reds have a far bigger one.

If you look at the Red Sox everyday, rotation and closer only the Mitch Moreland/Hanley Ramirez platoon at 1B, Martinez at DH and David Price in the rotation were free agent signings. Every team got about $50 million from the television contract this year . What did the Reds spend it on?

The Red Sox can make trades for players like Martinez and Kimbrel because they can afford to take on their huge contracts while the Reds have to trade players like Cueto that they know they can't sign to long term deals. Sure the Reds make mistakes like any front office by signing Bailey over Cueto, but the Red Sox can afford to make mistakes on contracts where the Reds cannot. You're right....The Reds have the ability to have these contracts on the books, and still go out and give a guy $22MM a year. How silly of us. David Price: $30MM Dustin Pedroia: $16MM Chris Sale: $12.5MM Craig Kimbrel: $13MM Drew Pomeranz: $8.5MM Rick Porcelo: $21.25MM Hanley Ramirez: $22.75MM

Exactly, it's absurd to entertain the idea that the two organizations are operating in anywhere close to the same universe when it comes to $$. Billy Costigan
Good to see the Red Sox go out and get a bat. Still won't be able to hit Kluber or Verlander.
00Rocket28
I think it’s absolutely stupid that the Reds gave that much to Votto. What good is it to have a great player when the rest of the team sucks? That money could’ve been spread around more to have a more balanced lineup. Unfortunately until there is an ownership change, you will have more of the same.

They chose to keep their star around and hoped the other “bargain” players would bring a title. They were a Latos start away from it possibly happening. As for the latter part of his career they would trade him if they could.
