Nice win for the Rebels yesterday. Received this score from parent of Atherton player.

Has Atherton at long last turned the corner, or is this just an anomaly?

I would love to see Atherton get over the hump. I grew up watching Atherton play in the mid 70's and still to this day have Atherton shirts and old Jerseys. I was there when Atherton beat ST. X one of my first memories I can recall.

When I was in high school, with Moses, Atherton had 1 of the best Running Backs in the State. Troy Hughes, When I was at Manual he would kill us, we would win the game but he would have 150-200 every game

Atherton beat Saint X ! Tell us more about what you recall about this game. That had to be a historic win for Atherton. I remember in the late 60’s DeSales being heavily favored at Atherton and lost. The DeSales head coach kept the colts on the field at halftime to go through a regular practice.

Atherton had some good players in the day. Dan Neal was the long time center for the Chicago Bears. Whit Wisman was a QB who I believe played at Georgia Tech. I'm sure there are more.

Sinbad showing my age here but the year was 1973 Atherton won 21-13 I believe.

What I remember most of all was the coaching staff told the kids if they beat X the coaches would do the dead cockroach dance in the middle of the field. They did it and was epic. In 1975 Atherton had a really good team and lost to 10-14 to X and Trinity 0-6. The last team at Atherton that had a winning record was 1976..

Atherton was hit hard during the busing era. I remember their coach saying he lost 14 starters the day it all started. It went by kids last names did not matter where they lived. Some of the players lived within seeing distance of the school but could no longer go there. It killed football and still has no recovered.

Atherton was very competitive when they were a “city” school. Believe it or not, their rivalry with Shawnee was the 3rd best rivalry in town, behind STX-Flaget and Male-Manual. Now once Flaget closed, the STX-Trinity rivalry surpassed all of them.
