Class 5A

Covington Catholic is serving notice in a big way. Many people did not think the Colonels could knock off Columbus DeSales, let alone blow them out of the water. The hottest team in Class 5A is Madison Southern who just completed a sweep of the Pulaski County 5A schools by polishing off Southwestern and the Pulaski County Maroons in back to back weeks. The Eagles will make their Top 10 debut. Christian County continues to win and remain undefeated as they get a very tough challenge from Owensboro who is in need of a signature win. Perry Central may not be represented in the rankings but they are in elite company as one of four undefeated teams remaining in Class 5A.

Why the shrug, plant? Is someone there that shouldn't be, or is someone not there that should be?

I thought Apollo might find their way in this time. I'm not near as wowed by Southwestern as some are. If Owensboro doesn't perform well against Christian County (and I know they are ranked third) then it might be time for them to go. They're trading on name as much as anything right now.

He's a Highlands hater. Still thinks Walton Verona should be ranked higher than Highlands in the NKY rankings. Delusional.

Of the teams near the bottom of the top 10 last week, Pulaski County and North Laurel lost. Pulaski got hammered by Madison Southern and North Laurel lost to a team with only one win coming in. They both needed to drop out, IMO.

 

So, who replaces them? Madison Southern was justly rewarded for back to back wins over ranked opponents, including 60-21 over Pulaski. That leaves a group of teams on the outside looking in jockeying for the other spot. Of all those teams, no one really had an attention grabbing win that was better than Highlands' close loss to Simon Kenton. That's probably why they're back in at 10.

Saving the "anything can happen" logic, which I understand, but in all probability, is there anyone in the state that can beat either of the top 2...save the other of the top 2? I don't feel like there is, but I'd love to hear other's opinions.

Way too early to think about (I will call it wishful thinking) but I am 99% sure Covington Catholic will be playing in week 14; I would love to see them play the Purples the day after Thanksgiving.

 

Purples has to get a lot ( a whole lot) done to make that happen but man what a game and special atmosphere that would be.

District 5 is paired with District 3 so if Covington Catholic won their district and the first two games in the playoffs and the one seed from District 3 won their first two games, the regional final would be at the D3 school (most likely South Oldham). Any other seed from D3 or D5 that plays Covington Catholic would be at CovCath.
