Somerset Briar Jumpers

This whole year, the talk in 2A has basically centered around the so-called Big 5 and then everyone else... Coming off 3 consecutive weeks of knocking off highly ranked teams from other classes, 2 of those from larger classes, to go along with a strong loss performance against the #1 team in 1A, 4 weeks ago, do the Jumpers now belong in that discussion with the other Big 5 teams and should we now call it the Big 6?

During this hot stretch, they've given up 7, 9, 12 and 6 points, showing that there D is very legit and if the saying "Defense wins championships" still holds true, then, IMO, they definitely deserve to be mentioned amongst that elite bunch of teams.

Thoughts? Opinions?

If I may ask, What happened to Somerset's defense against Bourbon County? Was the Quickness & Speed of the Colonels Titus Ransom & Dalen Landrum not been matched by Hazard, Rockcastle County or other Briar Jumper Opponents? Maybe Defensive adjustments were made.

No most of Somersets opponents have had good speed. I was hammered on another forum for saying this but almost all of bourbons positive Offense came vs a matchup they found and exploited over some very inexperienced secondary players. Somerset was down 6 secondary players that night from camp injuries and a couple in game injuries, they were literally playing 4 freshman back there most of the night. Bourbon fans will disagree, that is fine, but the jumpers would have won that game handily were it not for that fact.

Ok you lost me when you said Somerset would have won handily. Bourbon County beat you fair and square. Stop using the injury excuse. Bourbon was depleted that game as well. Top CB out (Cornett wouldn't have been able to "push" him out of the way for a TD like he did the freshman replacement. BTW, that offensive interference wasn't called) Bourbon was the better team that night and would likely be another close game if they played again.

We each have our own opinion, I'll stand by mine. It's not that bourbon has a bad team, Somerset is just really good at all levels of their defense when healthy; I think that has at the very least been proven in the 5 games since the Death Valley bowl.

Somerset will have opportunities to prove themselves soon

They have proven themselves, they are a good football team. Problem is this, Danville and LCA to this point have been very very good football teams. Somerset could lose both of those games and still be a good football team, that's just how good those two teams are.

An L is an L regardless of how much lipstick you put on it. Sorry.

I don't normally like to defend Somerset and usually don't but let me say this from first hand experience at watching them. Somerset front 7 if they remain healthy when they play Danville and LCA will give both teams all they can handle. They may not be the biggest boys but they are as fundenmental sound as you will ever see in a defense. They are very stout and there secondary is solid as well. They have just enough speed to gang tackle when you catch the ball and are always scrapping and ripping at the ball trying to strip it away. If you don't take Somerset serious you will end up on the wrong side of the score board just as we did last week and the other 3 teams that they beat for their 4-2 record. The one loss to beechwood rainstorm hurricane or not they still would have been able to keep the score low enough to make it very respectable and who knows the rain may have hurt there offensive game plan too. It works both ways. So if Danville and LCA don't want to show you respect let your defense go earn it like they always do and who knows Somerset could be there first losses for both teams. I don't like Somerset (don't take that the wrong way) but you have certainly earned my respect.

It seems like some people can’t understand what injuries can really do in the first game of regular season football. While it’s not an excuse, it’s definitely a reason. There isn’t a kid on that team that wouldn’t love to play that game again and I bet there wouldn’t be one on Bourbon County that wouldn’t love the same. Somerset lost that game when the inexperienced players got rattled by a good Bourbon squad. That’s just plain and simple. Hard to beat them with Freshman. Maybe the argument is player development to have them ready by that game. The best team that night did win the football game.

Madison Central ain’t 45 points better than Bourbon County, but they were Friday. What’s the excuse or where there just reasons? Sometimes the best football team doesn’t win.

Beechwood may not have had the chance to open up the offensive playbook but neither did Somerset. That game wasn’t great conditions and Beechwood still had to play. They scored 7 in the same weather. It’s not like the rain stopped every time Somerset had the ball. Stop acting like they were given a gift.

All that said, there’s still 4 games left. Raceland will have a lot to say on Friday. Then the consolation will be Danville and LCA to follow. I can’t think any of these next three teams will have an ounce of care how good Somerset is. They’ll respect them, but they aren’t going to care. In their minds, Raceland/Danville/LCA are better than SHS. Time will tell.
