How is Pikeville being Punished?

 

Preseason started out at 9th,

Week 1 stayed at 9th

Week 2 moved down to 10th

Week 3 stayed at 10th

Week 4 stayed at 10th

Week 5 moved up to 9th

 

So tell me how they are punished?

 

They beat the worse Covington Holy Cross team in sometime.

2A Covington Holy Cross has a SOS of 14.9, opponents are 12-9. Covington Holy Cross currently has the same ranked schedule as Somerset for perspective.

 

Louisville Holy Cross has a SOS of 2.9 with a combined opponents record of 11-11. To their credit they play DeSales, and got shut out.

 

Paris has a SOS of -17.5 with a combined opponents record of 6-14. Best win is over 0-5 4A Harrison Co.

 

Pikeville has a SOS of 20 with a combined opponents record of 12-7. 0-5 Covington Holy Cross is their only win. But if you look above Cov HC has played a tougher schedule.

A team doesn't get credit just because they played a really tough schedule. The team has to do something competitive against those tough teams. In addition, this is where human insight, knowledge and expertise surpasses the computer. Covington Holy Cross is horrible this year. They have been uncompetitive against their schedule. They don't get credit just because they showed up and played.

I'm not saying they're good, but they have a tough overmatched schedule. They could chalk up wins if they had an easier schedule like some teams in 1A do, that never leave their comfort zone. Pikeville did what they should of done with CovHC, but since they lost to top tier teams they get the short arm on rankings because they don't pad their schedule for wins.

Ludlow is the biggest surprise - being in the top 10. If they beat Williamsburg, they will be on their way to being one of the stories of the year in 1A.

Man I like Ludlow's Blackburn. Saw them multiple times last year and by the end of the season against Beechwood they had fallen pretty far. Never would I have suspected they could have risen from the ashes to be top 10 this year. Congrats to the Panthers and their on-field dynamo.

I said 6th earlier(I think there should only be a Top 5 in 1A, regardless) I'm just not sure what standards are used on these Polls. In the 4A thread, it was explained that it's not about W/L but performance. How do you judge Performance If you play a soft schedule?

You are making valid points. The teams ranked 6 through 9 this week are very close and almost interchangeable as to where they are ranked. Pikeville can make their case to move up in the rankings when they play Hazard. Right now, there is nothing they can point to that clearly says they should be ranked above the teams ahead of them.
