As non-district play begins to wind down, there are still some exciting inter-class heavyweight battles left on the schedule, and Mayfield vs. Corbin certainly fits that bill. These two programs are rich in tradition, have large, passionate fan bases, and currently have expectations of hoisting some major hardware at Kroger Field in early December.

But, first things first. The Cardinals and Redhounds have some business to tend to at Austin Peay University this Friday. This will be the third year in a row that these two teams have met, with Mayfield winning in 2015 (28-14) & 2016 (35-34). Last year's game was very much a tale of two halves. Mayfield thoroughly dominated the 1st half on the stat sheet, piling up over 350 yards of offense while holding Corbin to less than 20. But the Redhounds battled back in the 2nd half and scored to pull within a point with about four minutes to go in the 4th quarter. After the touchdown, Coach Haddix opted to go for two, but the conversion failed. Mayfield was able to put together a long drive to run out the clock and preserve the win.

So far this year, Mayfield has rolled to a 5-0 record with each win coming by at least 14 points. The Cards are averaging 46.2 ppg, while giving up 19.2. Coach Joe Morris has continued to utilize a two QB system, alternating between the arm of So. Jaden Stinson and the dual threat capabilities of Jr. Connor Guthrie. Jr. Kent Trey Matthews and Sr. Jack Murrell have been the top targets at WR with So. Travon Halliburton carrying the load at RB. A big, experienced OL has paved the way for an explosive offense. Sr. linebacker Kyle Hurt, Matthews and Guthrie have been standouts on the defensive side of the ball.

For Corbin (3-1), victories over Whitley County, Tennessee power Alcoa, and Pulaski County preceded a 36-29 loss to 1A #1 Beechwood. Corbin made the trek up I-75 to Fort Mitchell for a battle of #1’s and found the end zone a mere 42 seconds into the game. But, the top ranked Tigers didn't flinch. It was a back and forth tussle for three quarters until Beechwood found some breathing room at 36-21 a few minutes into the 4th quarter and held on for the win in a heavily hyped match-up.

Corbin was off for Week 4.

The Redhounds are led by three year starter Cameron Sizemore at QB. The left handed, Tebow-esque Senior is a load to bring down and has the arm strength to stretch a defense vertically. He has plenty of weapons at his disposal in the form of Jr. running backs Cameron Maguet and Chase Estep, Sr. WR Caleb Mitchell, and Jr. WR Christian Gosselin. They lead an offense that's averaged 25.2 ppg against a very challenging schedule.

Corbin's defense, which had been outstanding prior to the Beechwood game, has surrendered 16 ppg on the year. They're led by the linebacker trio of Sr. Aaron Money, Sr. Grant Gibson, and Jr. Noah Taylor. The defensive line is anchored by Sr. Matthew Masternak with Sr. Ethan Sims leading the secondary.

From the moment this series was announced, mouths watered over the possibility of these two programs locking horns. The first game was a competitive, but fairly straightforward two TD Mayfield win. Last year's game certainly had some 4th quarter drama, but Corbin didn't exactly bring its A game from the start and Mayfield apparently forgot that football games have two halves. Everything is shaping up for this to be the best game of the series so far. Whoever comes out on top will have a very large, fashionable feather in their cap. Expect a big game atmosphere at Austin Peay on Friday in this battle of EKY vs. WKY powers.

After losing to Beechwood Corbin kind of needs this one.

Corbin's schedule is incredibly front loaded and to be honest this should be the last team that is capable of beating them until quite possibly the Semi-Finals

Casey County, Bell County, and Knox Central will make them stretch their legs but none of those teams should be capable of going blow for blow.

With a week off to prepare I expect Corbin to bring their "A-game" into this one.

This should be a very interesting game. Mayfield will have to stop the Corbin QB from running and throwing them into a hole. Same thing for Corbin....defense has to keep them in the game and not playing from behind like in previous games.

Hope the college goal posts are not a factor and these two slug in out. I think Mayfield is as good as anyone in the loaded 2A field.

I believe they scheduled this one as a no holds barred, no disqualification, falls count anywhere, extreme rules grudge match.

MF 28 Corbin 21

Man, the Redhounds are getting no respect at all in the poll right now.

BW loss hurt Corbin in the polls is my guess but I am sure that loss will have the red dogs hungry

Watched the Corbin vs BW game

Beechwood's game plan for their V over Corbin was simple, they took what Corbin gave them. In the first half Corbin had 6 DB's so BW just went short then in the 2nd half Corbin switched up to stop the short stuff and BW just threw right over the top. Mayfield has similar weapons and could do the same though I doubt Corbin will take the same approach and learn from their mistakes. Having watched Corbin on film, I like the Cards chances alot

I saw this game last year at LWC. Mayfield was clearly the better team that night, and from the looks of what the two teams have done so far this season, I would expect to see the Cardinals win again. Mayfield 35 Corbin 17.

With Corbin having a extra week to prepare and getting their legs fresh I expect them to hang around for a while. Still think Mayfield has too many playmakers for them to stop. If we come out and play them hard for 4 qtrs I think we win by 2TDs.
