Somerset 66 Williamsburg 39

who said it was an excuse for Williamsburg. Was just stating a fact that most of the time the line for Wburg is outsized and yet they still do pretty good. I realize Mcreary is not a power house but they are a bigger school, was just an example of what the burg has to face...and bring on Corbin and Middlesboro? Why not just stay in the same district with those schools?

I wish we were. Those two teams, along with Wayne Co. and Russell Co. my senior year. The first 3 years we had sub-districts and only the winner made the playoffs so those were some really fun games--I'd like to see them again. Like I said maybe we'd beat them, maybe not but hopefully we'll pick up at least Corbin as a non-district game each year.

I would love to see IT on display 25 years later!

With a school and team as small as W'burg playing large schools usually means you are playing bigger players. Williamsburg line is almost always a 20 to 30 pound underdog in weight to most schools they play now. There is only so much they can do with they have and playing these tougher opponents so to speak might make them better but at the same time it can hurt them (the cloudland game last year killed Wburg the rest of the year because they never recovered from those big ol TN boys). I mean Mcreary is what a 3A school (maybe 2), Jellico is twice the size of Wburg, Onedia is pretty good size also and won a championship in TN a few years ago, KC is 3a.... every school they play is bigger than them....want to talk about somerset playing a tough non-district next year? Will they play Corbin and Middlesboro to warm up for that new 3A disrtict they chose to play up in?

;)

Actually, Jellico is an extremely small school with an enrollment around 360 students. They're hardly ever competitive in any sport. McCreary, Williamsburg, and Whitley County beat them regularly in football, boys and girls basketball, and volleyball to name a few.

Jellico High School is around that....I think Williamsburg high is about 250 max on a good year, so JHS is still larger than they are, but you are correct about them being competitive, they have actually seemed to go backwards the past few years.

talk about district play being competitive if it went back to one team making the playoffs.

It isn't like they ducked anyone this year in the pre-district slate. But if you're going to give Williamsburg credit for playing such a big 3A powerhouse as McCreary (who if I'm not mistaken has never won a playoff game) and those giant 1A Tennessee schools like Jellico and Oneida it seems kind of a contridiction to down Somerset for moving up a class and playing bigger schools. You really can't have it both ways, by your logic Somerset should always be the underdog when playing bigger teams, I mean if poor little Williamsburg can't compete against the bigger schools surely Somerset can't either. The fact is they played 3 class 3A playoff teams and the likely 1A champ for a predistict schedule. They aren't crying about playing bigger teams and worrying about getting hurt. They took their lumps and now they are delivering them to their distict--to the tune of 135-66 the last 2 weeks. Sure bring Corbin and Middlesboro on, they might beat us but so what, we won't use size as an excuse.

Isn't Somerset going to be 3A next year? So why could they not play with those teams?

They lost to Southwestern by 6 and Warren East by 4 so they did play with them and by the way those teams will be in 5A next year not 3A--6 class system remember:rolleyes:

I am sorry if my message got messed up, I was just stating that Somerset is a three A school that can not win single A

They're enrollment numbers are 1A in accordance with this years alignment, they aren't playing down or anything. Next year under the new 6 class system they would have 2A numbers, however, they asked for and were granted permission to play up a class in 3A, but this year they are a legit 1A team.

What's the reason for requesting to be a 3A school?

I'm not for sure, they were supposed to be in a district with Corbin, Middlesboro, Leslie Co. and Knott Co. Central. Instead they will be in a district with Jackson Co., Wayne Co., Garrard Co., Casey Co. and Taylor Co. I have heard that travel time was one of the reasons listed as Jackson Co. and Taylor Co are the longest trips both at one hour while Middlesboro, Knott Co Central and Leslie Co are both around an hour and a half to two hours. Plus its a 6 team district so there's one less regular season game to have to schedule.
