The score may show a 20 point victory, but the two teams are not that far apart. How about we leave it at that for now.

 

Your would be dead on saying that they arent that far apart. If Mercer is number one then Newport is definently a top ten team. Newport could move the ball but once it got inside the 30 yard line they had a hard time. Newport took it to Mercer in the opening drive of the game and looked ready to score until Hesch fumbled it away.

 

To me I dont think Mercer is to much better than they were last year. Great running backs is about all that teams got. Thank god for those rb's or they would be in trouble. They got a good group in that backfield and they are some shifty speedsters.

Your defense is ok but not great. And to say Newport didnt move the ball at all is way off. If you knew anything about are offense this year tonight was pretty much par for the course. Little 1A teams like Dayton and Ludlow held Newport to under 14 points. So holding Newport to 6 points tonight when they could have just as easy had another td or two isnt to impressive.

I think one thing Newport proved is 2a is defently still in reach and Mercer is not head and shoulders above the rest of 2a like some Mercer fans claimed.:thumb:

Well they need to spread it out more like it was mentioned by someone in this thread above. They are to predictable offensively. They need to get the ball in number 2 and number 11's hands more, they can make some stuff happen. The recievers that are playing right now suck its harsh but true. One had a pass hit him in the numbers tonight and bounce off his chest into a Mercer Co db's hands for a INT that lead to one of their scores.

 

Hesch has to get it going too. He doesnt have as much time or the weapons he had last year but when he does get time this year he just seems to be off target alot.

Dont get me wrong I'd love for them to get it cranked up and light up the scoreboard but they way Ludlow, Dayton, NCC, and now Mercer has held us to under 14 pts its gettin tough to think its ever gonna get there.

Well what happened to Mercer this isnt the type of score you usually get when this new high powered Mercer team plays. Although good win for them and they are still everyones favorite to win State.

Newport has a very good defense this game was a good one...

Im not trying to start anything ...But where where the refs from?................................thay where bad

Very good defense on both sides. Defense was the difference. Newport could have capitalized when Mercer fumbled on the kickoff to start the second half with Mercer only leading 14-0. But as stated Newport couldn't move the ball. They did have a few good plays. Especially that first series when they looked really good til the turnover. Newport is a quality team. And I love their facilities. Very nice. I was impressed with their run defense. Very disciplined. This was a defensive battle like alot of people predicted. Mercer had a little over 300 total yards and Newport had a little over 200. Newport did a good job containing corey and holding him to around 70 yards. Brandon had just under 170. But he got 47 of those on a late td run. The people in Newport were very nice, and it was a wonderful place to watch a game. See you guys in round 2.

It should have been a shutout. A costly Mercer penalty led to the touchdown. Mercer has alot to work on. Both teams will get alot of positives from this game.
