Such a unique gem of a cover... I'm a big fan of Mark Kozelek. Just picked up a vinyl reissue of his Sun Kil Moon album Ghosts of the Great Highway on Thursday last week. Great album.

Your suggestion prompted me to pull out my copy of "Ghost" and give it a spin while doing some much needed long overdue dusting of my apartment. It was a nice listen to get lost in my head to take my mind off of the mundane task of cleaning. With you being a Mark Kozelek fan I wonder if you can identify at all with my love/hate relationship with him? My introduction to him was through the Red House Painters' release of the brilliant Songs for a Blue Guitar, with which I felt as if I had struck gold. I was instantly obsessed and hooked. Because of I did some searching through their backlog, with which I guess through grand expectations, I was a bit underwhelmed. I wrote if off as a band finding themselves and considered SFABG to be them hitting their stride. I didn't give up though, and when he went on to begin Sun Kil Moon I followed. Then little by little I became bored and backed away from following so closely. I've lost count of the numerous copies of this and that that he's released that I couldn't resist grabbing up at library sales. In the back of my mind I always think that he's capable of magic and I won't deny him the chance to continue to prove it to me. Admittedly I haven't given these various releases (I literally don't know how many or their names) of his much of a listen because mostly upon first listen I'm instantly bored again and brought to a depressing place I don't want to be. Though it's his signature sound, I've been dying to ask him if he'd go get the operation to unplug his nasal passages because where once I felt it to be a heartwarming tone, now it's just become annoying because I can't unhear it, and it becomes too prominent in my consciousness. I suppose that's my problem, not his. Anyhow I'll always celebrate having been introduced to his music, but as time goes by I can't say that I've remained his biggest fan like I once was. "Ghost" finished up before I did with my cleaning, so because of the melancholy mood I was now in I reached for Sparklehorse's "Dreamt for Light Years in the Belly of a Mountain". I realize that he's not for everybody, but wow did the dude ever tap into some emotions. Sadly he was so in tune with them to the point that he ended up killing himself which made me think about some of my other favs like Jason Molina or Richie Lee of Acetone who left us far too soon. Then I got to thinking that if the day ever came that we hear that Mark Kozelek took his own life I guess that it would come as no surprise. With that said, I sure hope not.
February 27, 20188 yr While I like his music, I've heard nothing but bad things about Mark Kozelek as a person. The Red House Painters made some of the most depressing music I've ever heard, and I loved it.
