June 12, 20179 yr This is a strictly political reason I don't want the Democrat party to get two more Senate seats. From an Economic reason I don't see a benefit or from a geopolitical standpoint. Hawaii and Alaska had obvious logistic benefits for us. And for what it is worth I understand that actually, I don't like the idea of the democrats having more power in Congress. I just don't see how we can justify taxing them, having them serve in our military, having them be US Citizens, but not give them voting representation on Congress. From a practical standpoint I agree with you actually. When looking out our reason for breaking away from GB in the first place it feels wrong.

They have the option to break away without any threat of Military force correct ? If we can find a territory that leans GOP so we keep the Senate balanced then we can talk. Until then no thanks. The citizens of Puerto Rico and the other territories are US Citizens, that's one of the reasons I have an issue with it. If they weren't then I would be fine, but since they are citizens they are defacto disenfranchised.

What happens here influences the globe and I won't be for an island of 3.5 million tipping the scales.

In KY Bourbon pays close to $825 million in state, federal and local taxes.

June 13, 20179 yr Are the tax rates equivalent? No idea, just stating the impact of those taxes since it was brought up. It's not as big a deal for PR as most of us would have thought. For every $13.50 collected in PR, $13.25 goes to PR the rest to US.
June 13, 20179 yr In looking more at this particular vote there was only a 25% turnout. I don't think the US could act on it either way with that low a number of the population voting on the matter. I do think that they really ought to be a state, but I don't think thay this vote really is sufficiently representative of the Puerto Rican people.
