June 13, 20179 yr In looking more at this particular vote there was only a 25% turnout. I don't think the US could act on it either way with that low a number of the population voting on the matter. I do think that they really ought to be a state, but I don't think thay this vote really is sufficiently representative of the Puerto Rican people. Would 57.5% of eligible voters make you feel better? That's what voted in our last presidential election.

Knowing they cannot vote in the regular election and get one non voting congressman. 2,260,804 voted to become a state.

I have issues with how the primaries are set up anyway so that comparison doesn't do much for me. I think that is part of it, but there has been a big divide down there for some time. There are some large groups wanting unification with the US and alternately there are groups wanting independence. It is interesting and somewhat complex down there, but even so it doesn't matter as long as Congress doesn't care.
