Bishop Watterson (OH) at Covington Catholic Predictions

Featured Replies

Refresher: CovCath got pasted 40-3 in Columbus, OH last year in this match-up. However, I think many (myself included) felt the margin wasn't truly representative of the margin of talent on the two teams (meaning that while CCH was probably out-matched, they shouldn't have been out-matched to that extent).

That being said, with Watterson coming to CCH on Saturday, what are the thoughts and expectations? Does CCH playing a much more competitive game with Cincy St. X give them the confidence they need going into this game? Can CCH get the offense rollling this week? In their last 5 games v. Ohio teams they have scored the following points:

St. X -- 3 points

Elder -- 3 points

Last year:

Watterson -- 3 points

St. X -- 0 points

Moeller -- 6 ponts

15 points in 5 games v. Ohio teams. That trend will obviously have to change for CCH to win this game. I think CCH's defense should be able to slow down the running attack of Watterson (although they clearly weren't able to last year), but can they contain it enough to limit their scoring to 14 points or less? Last week Watterson put up 40 points against a traditionally good team in Cleveland Benedictine (although I don't know what Benedictine has this year). Watterson's games to date:

Won 24-7 over North Olmsted

Won 24-12 over Pickertington North

Lost 17-0 to Westerville South

Won 33-21 over Franklin Bishop Fenwick

Won 40-14 over Cleveland Benedictine

CCH offense has to find a way to put some points on the board or they have no chance in this one -- I don't think CCH can expect to keep Watterson in single digits.

Watterson dominated the lines of scrimmage last year and were very phsyical. I don't think CovCath knew what they were getting into on the road a week after playing eventual Ohio D-I state champ St. X.

This year, CovCath's defense slows Watty and the offense does just enough to squeeze out a 3 point victory.

Cov. Cath. 21-20.

CCH has essentially seen the same opponents for the last couple of years so for them to go to Watterson and play them last year with the new look offense and defense they had, they didn't know as much about BW as they do about say Highlands or Dixie or their NKY counterparts that they play year in and year out. Sure they watched film and studied them and what not, but playing Watterson at their place was something new for the Colonels. CCH has home field advantage this time and knows what to expect from the Eagles(I believe that is their mascot but I could be wrong). Not gonna pick a score but whoever wins won't win by too much. I'll still say CCH pulls this one off. Just like Carson and the Bengals, the Colonels get their revenge this week.

Watterson 30-16

NCF, you know that I have a ton of respect for your knowledge of Ohio Football (especially Central Ohio), but neither Elder nor St. Xavier could get to 30 points on CCH (and St. X only crossed the 20 point barrier with a relatively late TD). That seems like a lot of points for Hautman's bunch to give up.

Although I guess I'd be happy with 16 offensive points given the last 5 games versus Ohio teams during Coach Rodenberg's tenure. :D

Watterson will play the entire game in one night unlike Cicny St. X. I also do not beileve the weather will be as big as a factor in this one.

Time will tell if I am correct on this prediction if I am proven wrong I will man up an say as much.

I think Watterson is better this season then last though that is from what I have read and talk I have heard.

St. X played better on Saturday then they did on Friday. 10-3 Friday night, 13-0 Saturday morning.

I'm not questioning you knowledge that Watterson is down. I heard they were handled pretty easily 17-0 to Desales this year, after beating them quite easily last year. However, you do know a lot more about Ohio football then I do, so I could be mistaken.

CovCath climbs back in a low scorer. Brandon Brown has a big game, special teams and field position are huge.

CCH- 17

Watterson- 7
