Is Covington Holy Cross a Contender or a Pretender?

Featured Replies

I am hearing some very good things about the HC Indians and how big they are and how well they have been playing. Knocking off NCC on the road and smoking Bellevue in just a half 30-0 is pretty impressive. Should we assume they will be the top seed after knocking off Beechwood and how far will they go? Or are they just a flash in the pan and when it comes to their possible rematch with NCC in the playoffs they will come back to reality.

Hard to say depending on the outcome of the Beechwood game and that is assumming Beechwood is undefeated in the district going into the last week.

So basically if Holy Cross loses to Beechwood they would most likely get NCC in Round 1 of the playoffs at home (sort of), then Beechwood again in Round 2 on the road. That's kind of a tough road because, for example, it could mean playing Beechwood, NCC, Beechwood in a three week stretch.

Beating Beechwood could mean a #1 seed and game against the #4 team which could leave Beechwood and NCC to have to meet with the winner advancing to play Holy Cross on the road.

So one path seems quite a bit easier than other. As far as state consideration goes IMO this isn't a great year so far for the NKY Class A teams. But that could change. Last year at this time there didn't seem to be a state champion amoung them but that changed.

Too early. We need to see what happens with NC-Beechwood. If NC wins and Beechwood then beats HC, we have a 3-way tie. I haven't checked but my guess is that Beechwood may get the #1 in a 3-way tie.

I thought that Ncc was definitely considered a championship contender at this point last year, as was Beechwood. It was just a matter of who would survive out of the two of them.........at least thats what i remember about last seaon.

Pretender. NCC drills them in the playoffs. :sssh:

Actually at this time last year after both teams had played CovCath you could make a point that Beechwood was championship contender based on their 14 point loss and a 3 point loss to Alter who was a very good Ohio team. NCC got waxed 42-0 by CovCath. Then Beechwood lost to Bellevue and let NCC back into the district race, and NCC took advantage.

Not a certainty that they will meet again.

AWNP- i guess your correct (and you obviously have a much better memory than I) but you can usually take very little from the covcath v beechwood game as that is one of those rivalries were records and margin of victory mean very little as to how the rest of the year will go for both teams. your right as far as NCC is concerned though, they did get waxxed by a good covcath team and it seemed the memory of that loss motivated them the rest of the season.

sorry it should be APNW!

Point is there is a lot of football to be played especially for Holy Cross at the end of the year. Maybe they beat Beechwood, get the easier path, and go on to advance out of the district. Maybe they get the easier path but get beat.

Maybe they lose the district race to Beechwood, but then bounce back in the playoff. Maybe they lose to Beechwood and get bounced in Round 1.

Basically right now they have put themdelves in contention for the district crown and that's the best they can do at this point.

I think they are a pretender when it comes to any chance at the state championship. I believe that if any team from NKY in class A makes the state title again it will be either as always Beechwood or NCC... I really dont think Holy Cross will beat Beechwood but it should be a close game. I know I will be rooting for Holy Cross because I just think that whoever gets the 4 seed out of Ludlow or Dayton matches up better with Holy Cross than with the other teams. So I dont like Holy Cross but I know I will be rooting for them in the regular season except when they play Ludlow.

your right. it will be interesting to see how things shake out in nky 1a

I think the HC/Bwood game will be a good indicator, I still think NCC will make a nice run come playoff time, I'm very interested in the outcome of both HC/Bwood and NCC/Bwood. As far as making a serious run I'll take Bwood and NCC over HC, I'll go with pretender.

Holy Cross is this Years Bellevue story from last year. A very good group of Seniors that has beaten NCC already and could very well knock off the Beechies. Neither Beechwood or NCC IMO are at the level that they have been in the past few years and HC looks ready to maybe take advantage of that. With that said I also would not be surprised to see HC fizzle in the playoffs much the same way as Bellevue did last year in the playoffs. Why? Coaching, just not sold on the Koz like so many others. When all is said and done I don't think the Class A State Champion this year is in NKY unfortunately. I believe the team from Danville is far superior this year then any team from other parts of the state.

it does sound as if the 1a championship will run thru titletown this year, but you can never count out the beechies or more recently, the thoroughbreds. It would be interesting to add another nky 1a team to the state champ picture. It would get the downstate boys in a uproar over another nky school in perennial contention for a 1a championship. with all that being said, i still think HC is still a few years away from being considered a legit contender year in and year out. i'll go with pretender until proved otherwise!
