April 23, 20179 yr Make it three options. Wally World ain't going anywhere anytime soon. There's a great market here for Chinese-produced goods. You do know that it's less than 10% of what they sell, right? One report from a couple of years ago had it listed at a number that would have been around 7 or 8% of what they sell. Lower % than upscale Target.

April 23, 20179 yr There won't be malls in 15 years. I think that you're probably right. Recently I ducked into the Florence Mall on a rainy day for the first time in years while waiting for prescription glasses at a nearby Eyemart Express, and aside from a few senior mall walkers the place was pretty deserted. The food court was really the only area that seemed to attract anyone. Thankfully the place looked clean, and while malls are certainly handy to have multiple stores under one roof, I couldn't help but feel that I was taking a step back in time, and one that had outlived its purpose. The plus though, rainy day or not, I just couldn't imagine where else in Florence that I could hang out without slashing my wrists from complete boredom. At least the mall felt like a comfortable place to be as if I was "somewhere", because deserted or not, no matter how many stores you'll find up and down Mall Rd, there just is no "there" there, and to make things worse it's feeling dated, and not in a good way. I kept pondering just what the future could hold for such an area like that if retail places continue to be a thing of the past. Though it's dead, the mall at least offered a centralized place to be.
April 23, 20179 yr They will have 14,000 by fall. They open 1-2 new ones per day! Family Dollar only has 8,500! The Dollar General on Madison Ave in Covington that shut down over 5 years ago held the wonderful distinction of being their top location in the whole country that suffered the most from shoplifting. They were losing money and had to fold. The nearby Family Dollar on Madison is a filthy dump and no doubt has their share of shoplifting. It's a wonder that they have survived this long. The place is poorly managed and the staff just doesn't care. A couple of years ago a Dollar Tree opened on Madison in Covington and within 6 months the shelves were a complete disorganized disaster. Though they started out looking sparkling new, they had no system in place to keep it that way. Little by little they seem to be getting more conscientious employees, and it's starting to be more realistic, but right out of the gate they didn't contemplate the number of inconsiderate customers who'd pick stuff up and place it elsewhere like they just couldn't help themselves. By comparison the 3 Latonia locations of each of these stores is like night and day. The Family Dollar is noticeably cleaner and more organized. The Dollar Tree is well managed and have kept their act together, and though the Dollar General feels cluttered and a big disorganized, it's at least acceptable.

April 24, 20179 yr Shrink is built into their business model. Retail margins are extremely high. Average employees in the stores at any given time? Any one want to guess? Also guess the average total purchase by consumer and the most common purchase, While shoplifting is certainly a problem, the majority of shrink is internal in nature. Employee theft, poor inventory control, employee errors, etc, usually make up most of the shrink a store experiences. If stores are getting stolen into to closing, it's usually an employee problem.
April 24, 20179 yr Walmart is Still Misrepresenting its Made in America Claims | Alliance for American Manufacturing Form the article, $49.1 billion of their annual comes from China. They did $490.0 billion last year. I did not see that in the article.

Very true about employee theft. Execution at store level is nightmare as well. Very low paying jobs that many are filled by poorly educated or unskilled workers.
April 24, 20179 yr Two things I buy in the Maysville Dollar Tree. Dollar reading glasses and dollar 20-ounce Diet Dr. Pepper. That's at a Dollar Tree. Different pricing model at Family Dollar and Dollar Genera; where everything is not $1.00. And they now own Family Dollar.
April 24, 20179 yr That's at a Dollar Tree. Different pricing model at Family Dollar and Dollar Genera; where everything is not $1.00 Correct. I don't frequent the others.
April 24, 20179 yr Correct. I don't frequent the others. Your purchase pattern is not far off of the other 2. Most common purchase. "A smoke and a coke". (Mountain Dew)
