The Jump Ball to start the game............why should teams try to win it?

 

Normally both teams are set to prevent any kind of fast break basket off of the jump ball. So the team that wins the jump ball generally starts in their own backcourt.

 

However, the team that loses the jump ball get the next one. That next jump ball is usually under your own basket or under the opponent's basket. So it is a much more valuable scoring opportunity or in preventing a score by the opposition.

 

Even if there are no additional jump balls in the entire game the team that loses the jump ball to start the game gets it to start the second and fourth quarters.

 

So wouldn't a team be better off intentionally losing the jump ball to start the game?

If the number of alternating possessions is even, then no benefit to winning it. HOWEVER, if the number is odd, then the team that wins the initial tip gets one more possession than the other. In a low scoring game with a low number of possessions, that one possession advantage might matter.

If you win the opening jump you are guaranteed to have the same number of possessions as your opponent and possibly 1 more !! If you lose the tip you can only have 1 less or equal.(I'm not counting each offensive rebound as a new possession for this ). May concede tip because you can't win it but that's not because they want to lose it!

If there is an odd number of "jump balls" in a game the winner of the jump ball gets an extra possession.

Some coaches want to win the tip because it's one of the best times to run a set and have every player on the same page. Plus, the defense will be more lax and that helps to run a really good set.

 

And it's never a bad thing to start out 2-0 or 3-0.

And you can run a play off the jump if you have a player that usually wins the tip.

Isn't it just competitive nature to want to win the tip?

No need for coaches to overthink this. Go get the tip and set the tone early.

 

The only exception is if your jumper can't compete with the tree the opposition runs to the center circle. A lot of athletes with any size can at least get a finger tip on the ball with the tallest of the tall though, and sometimes that's all it takes for an unexpected possession and a little extra morale boost.

Why does the visiting team get the ball? No coin flip at least? And if you're going to the coin flip, is it really that different from a tip-off?

Courtesy....a nice gesture of sportsmanship to begin the game. The home team welcomes the visitors, hands them the ball and says, "please, put this in that iron ring and we'll have fun"......

Well, no need to worry. Jump balls to begin the game are NEVER going away.

 

As for all that other stuff....you mentioned that, so it must be present in your mind. I don't care....

Anyone remember the bad call against WKU on a jump ball in the NCAAs in favor of Micigan and Cazzie Russell. What a joke.

The refs need to throw the ball up better and watch for tips on the way up.
