There probably needs to be two threads on this topic. One for people to rant on why it even exists and another for those who have come to terms with it's existence and actually want to discuss the possible teams that will be competing in it. Murray is an obvious favorite. Who else has a chance to make some noise?

It's an invitational much like many other tournaments. You don't hear schools whining that they don't get invited to the Lloyd holiday tourney, the Swauger Classic, the King of the Bluegrass, etc. They get to pick and choose who they want in. No different than what has become of HOFer Stan Stediel's vision many years ago.

 

So you think if Grant Co called Lloyd or the owners of those other tournaments and they had opening, they'd tell them "no, you're not allowed in?"

 

We can all play this off as "just another tournament". But it's not and we know it. Let's just call it what it is...regardless of what we name it or want to try and make people believe. The ONLY reason it's named the way it is is so it can continue the way it is, not interrupt the Sweet 16 format and keep the small schools from complaining so much that the KHSAA has to move from one class to classifications and put an end to their cash cow.

 

Lets just call it the small school state championship and be done with it. And teams can choose which one they want to compete in. Do you want to compete in the small school or the open? Your school makes the choice each year. There...all done! LOL

They may tell them no if it was full...agreed. Any tournament would do that. But if there was a spot, would they tell them no based on anything? Would they tell Grant no and then let someone else in?

 

As far as the power tournaments, Silver Grove wouldn't call and ask to get in. They would be in over their head and it just wouldn't happen. But a statewide tournament that is set up exactly like the KHSAA and includes some teams but has rules against others, not sure that's the same.

Yes it would. You'd have the Murray's and other really good small schools asking why they aren't allowed to compete. Proponents play this off as "just like any other tournament" and "its not a state tournament". But that's not what it is. There aren't "conditions" to get in other regular tournaments. You call up and see if there is room. It's yes or no. In this one, they ask "how big is your school?" You don't have a chance to get in if it's over a certain size. So it's not like any other tournament or classic. There are stipulations. It's the way around creating classifications. That's it. It gives some schools a second chance at success. But the problem is, it's dominated by the schools that CAN compete with the others anyway. So it really only creates segregation and gives some schools two chances at success statewide. See Holy Cross!

Thanks for the help RCC9! It certainly isn't like any other tournament or classic in the state. I mean every region has participants that have to play in to reach the "the All A Classic".
