How about it, Clyde?

You get a step and a half no matter if you go backwards sideways or whatever. That's easiest way I can think of it. Most refs have a hard time with it though. Some kids look so good doing it that it's not called a walk when it is. Others don't give a crap and call walk all the time. It is frustrating.

I bet you hate the jump shot, right?

Nope, love the jump shot more than the dunk. If you have any height at all you should be able to dunk a basketball. Taking a defender one on one deep and then popping up for a fade away jumper is beautiful!

Why do we spend so much time creating problems where there are not problems?

If it were the "American" step no one would blink an eye.

Huh? Why insinuate what you are trying to insinuate? It's an extra step, I don't care what you call it, Euro, American, Kangaroo, etc.

So this is a hearsay conversation? Before everyone starts bashing a guy here, you better make sure it's true.

And as always, if you think the refs are bad in the 8th, what are you doing to help? Step up.

I don't know if I want some of the guys here to be refs. :lol2:

Step-and-a-half is a myth. The violation occurs when the pivot is lifted and then lands before the ball is released. That's it.

It's not an extra step if done correctly. You get 1.5 steps regardless. The beauty of the Euro step is the change of direction, which makes it both hard to defend and look like a travel.

And I'm not insinuating anything. When Gnobli et all made this popular 10+ years ago there was an uproar in the America basketball community - until people looked at it closely and determined it was legal.

Now LBJ and Durant are among the best at the Euro in the world.

I've always used a half step as a description of what you just said lifting the pivot foot but releasing the ball before it lands.

If a layup is legal, then a euro step is legal. Its that simple.

In the girls basketball forum, we went down this road a couple of years ago and Clyde was super helpful. The end result is, if done right, it is legal, but many referees call it a walk just because it "looks funny". There is nothing you can do about it. If it gets called a walk, then the player has to adjust and do it no longer.

And that would be a legal step and half. Right?

I know what ur saying but a normal layup is step and half. Some layups on a step and half are still walks. I know but done properly is a step and half.

What does "step and half" even mean? The rule articulates, as Clyde said, that a violation occurs when the pivot foot is lifted, and THEN LANDS AGAIN. If you are considering a "step" to be when you lift your pivot foot and land on the non-pivot foot, then I would say anything less that "2 steps" is legal... i.e. as long as the ball is released before the second foot lands ... just before, let's say ... then more than a step and a half is legal .... in your vernacular, as I understand it, 1.99999 steps would be legal.

The difficulty, and I think Clyde will back me up on this, is ascertaining when the dribble "ends" to establish the pivot foot, especially on a shot on the run. If you can figure out when the dribble ends, its pretty simple to judge the legality of the move.

I think much of the issue is determining when the ball has been picked up. The game moves fast. It isn't easy to determine when the dribble is over and a step is being applied.

Republicans say no and Democrats say yes. That simple.

Guard from Dixie Heights used the Euro ("did" the Euro? "Performed" the Euro? "Took?" "Utilized?" "Demonstrated?") the other night in the women's game at Holy Cross. Refs did NOT call traveling.

My point exactly is this thread. Nobody knows how to call it. I have seen the perfect in my eyes euro step made and it called a walk. Seen others that should been a walk not called. I have seen many wide open layups that should been a walk but let go cause they wide open I guess.
