East ridge has a couple of backs that run very hard and hit the hole with a head of steam. They will have some success and may earn a playoff spot. I think they played hard and stayed after it to the end. They were just overmatched.

 

Belfry scored on their first 4 plays from scrimmage. Their sophomore quarterback, Elkins, made his first varsity start and really played well. According to WXCC radio, he was 8-11 for about 160 yds and 2tds. He threw several nice balls to several different receivers. They said Belfry had over 500 yds of offense, mostly all in the 1st half.

 

The freshmen and sophomores played the entire 2nd half.

 

I'm sorry I didn't hear the East Ridge stats as I only caught the tail end of the WXCC broadcast.

Boy Elkins throws a nice ball! I was pleasently suprised with his accuracy too, IMO I think we have found our qb!

I'd be surprised to see a switch now, Josey. I know the point you're making about the level of competition, but Elkins looked really at home and relaxed back there, and he was sharp. Preston played WR and DB and looked good in that role. Preston is good enough of an athlete to contribute on this team, even if it isn't at QB (ala Devin Kohari).

I can't see Haywood reversing course at this point...you've got to do what's best for the team. And you're right...Preston is WAY TOO GOOD OF AN ATHLETE to waste him on the sidelines while on offense. Unfortunately, I didn't get to see last night's game..but I've gotten a lot of replies indicating the Pirates looked sharp. Elkins certainly gives us other options..ala a passing game... that we haven't had in sometime. Hopefully, we can work Preston in at WR...and maybe even at TB a little.

If Preston went to tailback that would make Belfry as deep as they have been there in quite sometime ('92- Mark Carroll, Kevin Varney, Danny Oliver, or '95 Hobie Dotson, Josh Stacy, Adam Eastwood, Micah Caudill).

 

Personally, I like would like to see that move.

Agreed, a backfield of Chapman, May, and Preston would be more suited for a matchup against Russell and Mercer. Preston at CB would also be a good move but whatevere Coach Haywood does will work out for the best.

Coach definitley has a lot of options. Barring an injury to May, we have plenty of people to plug in there in the backfield as needed.
