Shelby Valley 68 Piarist School 8

what financial reasons if you don't mind me asking @BigVMan23?

I actually posed the same question you raised here a while back, and it was explained to me that there are financial payouts each schools receives by competing in the KHSAA that I wasn't aware of. I don't remember all the specifics, so someone who knows better than me might need to chime in here. @PurplePride92 might be able to answer this better than I.

I'm assuming money made from district tournaments and other possible perks. I have to imagine that they have a better gate when they host district opponents like Shelby Valley as opposed to a smaller school.

If you are referring to district & regional tournament shares that dont really come from the KHSAA, but rather the host school for the tournament (KHSAA just receives a financial report from the tournament manager), that would be minimal monetary compensation honestly. Schools such as these would be getting more from a district profit share where everyone plays, than a Regional share, where if you dont play you will get a check for something like $20-30 bucks.

I would honestly say the amount that these teams pay each year to the KHSAA for membership dues, probably exceeds the amount of $$$ they would receive from their District & Regional shares combined.

Unless this is a small school thing that happens that I dont know about, there is no other types of "payouts" I was an AD for a 6A sized school here in KY for nearly 7 years & we never received any of these type of gifts.

This school has less than 50 kids in it. They get 1/16 of all boys regional tournament profits and 1/16 of all regional girls tournament profits. They also get 1/4 of all district tournament money from both the boys and girls tournaments. I don't know about the 59th District, but last year the regional money equated to about 6,000 for each tournament and they have never advanced past the districts in their schools history.

I would say it don't cost much to drive up and play a few games. The 12,000 cut plus whatever the district money is far out weighs KHSAA dues and transportation cost.

For the record, the 59th District is a seeded district with Shelby Valley, Piarist, East Ridge, and Pikeville. In years past they have conceded without playing. This year I believe every team will play them home and away so look for more lopsided scores.

Not sure what the money looks like in the Christian league, but I would say being in the KHSAA is profitable for the school.

We aren't members, but we play a lot of teams in both Christian associations. As far as I know, there is no type of payout that I'm aware of.

@15th Region So they get $$$ from all Regional tournaments even if they don't field a team for the specific sport such as Soccer or are we just talking about Basketball?

I looked them up & they play Boys & Girls Basketball, Cheer & Volleyball $6000 a share is an insane amount of $$$ for a 1/16 share, so thats 2 shares of 32 of 192,000 dollars.... If so, I have been in the wrong region for all these years. :ohbrother: Just a factual note, the most recent KHSAA audit posted from 2014 on the website shows that the Girls Sweet 16 took in 297k, so if the boys & girls 15th Region tourney is taking in 192k they are killing it for sure. another side note from 2014 the football finals took in 253k that year.

The KHSAA dues for a school such as Piarist is $800 a year.

I knew I posted too fast. Doesn't look like the Regional Tourney is as much of a money maker for Piarist as first thought unless something has changed. This is from the latest financial report available on the KHSAA website from 2014.

Piarist for the 58th District boys & girls basketball tournament took home $3164.40 combined share.

They received $1,720.09 combined share of the tournament 15th Region Tourney.

I'm just not sure the $$$ is worth it honestly, but I'm not there.

13th region I think all schools rather you make region or not are guaranteed 1500.

The 15th Region tournament for both boys and girls basketball is hosted by the Pikeville EXPO Center (Sub hosted on a rotating basis by each district and teams within said district). The EXPO guarantees at least 50,000 for the boys tournament alone. Anything more than that (off ticket sales) goes on top of the 50K and the EXPO keeps concessions plus a few costs. Per the last policy board meeting (and this has not changed for quite some time) each of the 16 schools get an equal share of the profits; hence 1/16.

This happens for both boys and girls (and Im only talking about boys here) and is not prorated toward the winning team or the ones who advance further and subsequently incur more debt. In fact, the winning team usually goes in the hole on transportation costs to get to the state tournament even with the 4 rooms and mileage the KHSAA gives you.

Enter Piarist. They have never defeated a 15th Region opponent since school inception in the 90's (regular or post season). They have been defeated in every district tournament first round game they have ever played (a few years they did not participate). Yet they get 1/4 of the money from the district tournament and 1/16 from the boys and girls regional tournament each.

They drive an economy size bus to and from games (never incurring cost for any regional tournament and usually only making one trip to districts for a boys/girls tournament double header). In fact, they would be just fine with forfeiting regular season games to all district foes (even less cost) as this has happened in the past to include just a couple years ago. They have no costs for gym fee (play at Sportsplex in Knott County or home gym in Martin area in past).

Im just looking at basketball here, no other sports. But I would estimate they are in the $10,000 range profit on district and regional tournament and only participate in 2 games total. Im not even factoring in All-A as I do not have access to those board meetings (might be no profit sharing, might be some, don't know). One maybe, two trips for two ball games yet get an equal share.

Piarist is a beast on the academic side, make no mistake, and look at sports more like most high school's would look at club events or after school activities. They are, however, smart enough to have a low bottom dollar in the basketball programs and you cant deny they make money from tournaments they have little to no relevance in.

The policy board should vote to prorate profit sharing based on how far a team advances to off set cost IMO. I wonder if Piarist would go to the Christian School's exclusively then? They only play a hand full of 15th Region games anyway, just enough to get their share of the pie.

Now don't get me wrong, I don't hate Piarist or what they stand for. Their kids, faculty, staff are always very nice and seem hard working. Im just providing information to an aforementioned post on what one of the possible reasons they stay in the 15th Region under the KHSAA. Its just my opinion, but it is profitable for them and likely drives other sports that are not.

It wont let me post the entire financial report that everyone can see from the 15th Region tournament & the 58th District Tournament that ire on the KHSAA website because its an adobe file, so here it is in pictures. The $3164.40 I posted was the share they received in 2014 from the District Tournament, an equal share that all 5 schools received. they received much less from the Regional share.

I'm not trying to argue with you, I am just stating the financial facts that I can see from the KHSAA website. The schools up to 2014 didn't receive an equal share from what it is showing here. they do receive an equal share from the District tourney.

District Report from 2014, sorry for cutting off the side of it, all 5 schools got an equal share.

If I'm not mistaken pianist didn't put a boys team in during 2014 season so that's why it's about half...not sure why there is a few dollars difference. Maybe spirit award or host school cost that year. Spirit award wasn't given last year but was 500...they mention equal share each meeting I assure you..those numbers pretty even but a little different I concur. I know tourney director appointed by host district gets paid as well

I commend them for doing this, unlike other teams throughout the state in other sports.
