Notre Dame reported themselves after doing their own internal investigation. Doesn't sound like they expected to have to vacate wins though. They are going to appeal.

 

It happened so it makes sense. For the life of me I can't figure out how UNC is going to walk free. They have probably the biggest academic cheating scandal in history yet nothing will happen. Basically comes down to if you are a big school and win a title the year you cheat, you are safe. I bet if Notre Dame won the 2012 Championship over Bama, then the NCAA would have done nothing. They don't mess with teams who win titles in D1 even if they cheat.

The NCAA handling of the UNC misconduct is baffling. Just can't understand how athletes getting credits for fake classes isn't a major academic violation. Yet they're throwing the book at Notre Dame.

Was it the actual BCS championship they took away or was it the coaches poll or ap championship. I know back then we still had 2 different things crowning champs.

The AP didn't strip theirs. There isn't a coaches poll title. The coaches poll was used in the BCS formula.

I just read a few stories on it. The NCAA gave them infractions and took things away. The NCAA didn't actually take it away. They didn't have the authority to take it away. The BCS had its own committee even for that, who makes that decision, and it was the BCS committee who decided to make them vacate it.

 

Can't help but think if it was the NCAA decision they may have only gave a slap on the wrist and avoided taking it away. Or wouldn have conveniently only found evidence on Bush for the following season the year they lost the title game. Because they don't mind punishing the ones who lose the title games if they cheat.

Thanks for the research I didn't know that. I assumed the BCS was a subdivision of the NCAA, not a 3rd party. Is it still that way with the CFB Playoffs? Would the committee have to take title away now or does the NCAA have the authority now with the new system?
