New Overtime Pay Rules To Be Reversed in 2017?

Featured Replies

Politico has a story about a law that allows Congress to repeal laws that were enacted in the previous 60 days. It only requires a majority vote.

Report says one of the key laws they to repeal is the new overtime law that takes effect Dec 1, 2016.

I believe it says that salaried workers are owed OT (probably with some sort of threshold ) and workers who make under $47k are owed OT at at 1.5X hourly wage (again, not sure of the details).

One estimate said that 20M Trump supporters would be impacted.

Tough sell to the Trump supporters despite it potentially making economic sense? Will those who are losing the OT pay be upset?

I did see where Wal-Mart bumped managers' pay up to $48,500 from $45,000 to avoid the OT rule.

So companies will have to make the changes and then go back on them?

I doubt companies that gave raises to avoid paying salaried OT will take them back, maybe some smaller companies. No way Walmart or other large companies that gave raises to get above the threshold will now take those raises back.

Well I haven't gotten one yet but was looking forward to it.

Thanks Trump.

I see both sides of this, as a salaried worker for 30 years there were time where I worked way over reasonable hours and I was scheduled from 44 to 52 hours for all of those years. I knew that going into the job so I never complained about it, it's just the way it was. Over the years the hours reduced over and over til at the end I was Salary and only expected to work 40 hours.

Just curious, have you been told you were getting a raise or was your company going to pay you OT?

I wonder how many of those 20m Trump supporters are actually impacted? I think the poll said it was workers who make under $50k. It didn't say whether they work part time, do not get any OT the way it is now, or work for a company that already pays OT.

Havent been informed of either yet.

I wondered about that 20M figure as well.

In reading this I find it hard to believe 20M will be impacted. If I'm reading this correctly it's salaried workers who will benefit.

Update: Note I just read said the WH estimates 4.2M will benefit from the Dec 1 changes.

But remember that in today's world how it's spun is what the truth is. Details be damned so plan on some spinning.

It only impacts salaried workers, hourly workers already get compensated for OT hours with either "OT pay" or "Comp Time".

Does that mean when my salaried boss leaves at Noon on Friday, he loses comp time?

Depends on your company, it's more about making sure that low paid salaried workers aren't worked 60 hours a week just because they are salaried without receiving compensation for those extreme hours.

I am very involved in this one as it impacts people working for me. Their status will change 12/1 to now be OT eligible (non-exempt vs exempt). Government meddling in business and doesn't make sense.

Should we assume some of those who are impacted voted for Mr Trump? Are they strong enough supporters to overlook a law re-write if should occur?
