If I Were A High School Player Today.....

Featured Replies

The problem is Clyde it is the same people over and over and over again that feel the need to interject their negative comments. Many of them have been suspended countless times only to come back and spill the same venom if not more than was done previously.

On the topic of "constructive criticism", who said that these people are of the position to offer such criticism to HIGH SCHOOL kids?

Times are a changing without question. Some teams are enjoying success for the first time in a long time or the first time ever and now the fans of those teams are "experts" on all things Kentucky High School Football.

Pot meet kettle

Let's not misrepresent what I said. I didn't say anything about "constructive criticism." That's more than fair. No one said everyone should be called "second best." Heck, I don't have a problem with constructive criticism of a kid's play.

My issue, AGAIN, is the need to let a team know that they're not as good as the Big 3 from Louisville or not as good as the Boone '97 team or...100% irrelevant unless someone brings it up in the thread. It comes across as petty and , frankly, misses the real value of high school athletics.

So if you want to debate what I actually said let's go.

Then dont have rankings.

Pot meet kettle

Hardly. Show me a post where I ever criticized a high school kid? I'll wait. Exactly one of the reasons why I do not post much on this site anymore. Too many wannabees and know it all's.

I will stick to the contests and leave the analysis to people like yourself and the other resident experts.

Let's go then...

Considering you are specifically using one of my posts as an example and just brought it up again let's play ball.

Might I add, a post that I specifically said was not meant to be a big deal, but obviously it rubbed you the wrong way.

Considering what my point of debate was about was DIRECTLY tied to the pre-game discussion thread (it was even directly quoted by someone else) and considering it was something that was brought up several times and had been a talking point in different threads over the last four or five weeks, then I absolutely feed that it was relevant to the discussion after the team lost and was absolutely fair ground for debate.

What makes it "petty" when someone with absolutely no tie to the program or any axe to grind whatsoever with the school in question brings it up after it had been an on-going discussion across multiple threads? Do you think I was pulling for that school to lose? If anything those bold claims and critiques of rankings by their fans actually got me to follow them more if anything else.

I have always tried to be firm with my criticisms but also quick to accept when I am wrong or mistaken. In this case I see no reason to apologize or cater to your wishes.

Truth be told, since you wanted to use the word "petty" to describe things; I would say it was quite petty to start an entire thread with a passive aggressive undertone to try and indirectly lecture posters and how they "should" act. I have never had an issue with your posting on here and think you do a great job advocating for NKY athletes and trying to bring them attention, but on this particular topic I think you are reaching.

1. I never thought you were trying to belittle. However, we've all had posts that were untimely and/or taken the wrong way. Yours came off to me (and maybe a few others) as "yeah nice season but...." That's my issue with it.

2. You get to a point where you just can't take negative non-related posts and you make a thread. In reflecting on the thread I'm still good with it.

Ridiculous

Ridiculous

How so? What is it that rankings do? They show what teams are better than others?

Context is important if you're going to debate.

It was not my tone whatsoever and even went as far to clarify later in the thread with my second reply

To be fair it was more than just those comments. It's been a collection of little comments and replies. I am not making that point just based off one comment.

It hasn't been "Simon Kenton-esque" by any stretch of the imagination, but Ryle fans have been persistent in criticizing rankings that didn't have them number 2 or as a Top 3 or 4 team overall in the State.

I am not meaning for this to be a big deal, just making a point of order to settle a handful of side debates that have happened in various threads.

There is no shame in losing to Scott County, and I think this even further legitimizes that Ryle had a team that was definitely among the Top 10 overall in the State, but at the same just pointing out that those posters who were persistent that Ryle was on the same level as the Big 3 may have been a bit pre-mature.

Great season and great team nonetheless for Ryle and a great career for Mr. Tanner Morgan!

If I were a high school football player logging on to BGP after this weekend I'd say to myself "Is this what I'm going to turn into as an adult?"

Game threads are filled with adults making sure everyone knows that they don't think such and such team is as good as others do.

CCH isn't a power

Good lord. I'd fail my classes just so I didn't have to be an adult if I thought this was my destiny.

Just enjoy the competition and the fun of the game, boys. Ignore us morons online who are worried about our past failures or worried that MY school isn't as good as THEIR school.

Congrats to all. From those of us that played we fully respect the commitment.

Agreed, and my comment about CovCath not being a power wasn't me fishing for butthurt in the CCH community. CovCath is a quality team, but I kinda reserve "power" for teams who reach BG with regularity. They're a threat, and never to be taken lightly, but there's a difference between a NKY power and a state power. No offense meant, just a difference of defining the term.

And, no, despite the great run that the Birds had between CovCath victories, I don't consider them to be a power at the moment. My definition is pretty fluid.

A lot of these kids do not need to get on this site to see this. Just go to a high school sporting event like football or basketball and sit in the stands and listen to some of the parents!!! It is sad to say the least and helps me to remember when my child is that age to just enjoy the ride and not live vicariously through them! I get disgusted the way parents talk about other players, coaches, other teams, etc.

I realize sports are passionate and parents want to see their kid succeed, but come on man, when your kid is embarrassed by your actions, it is time to tone it back about 5 notches lol

Didn't win any big games

Not as good as my Boone County team in the 90s

Not the best Ryle team

Not as good as the Big 3 from Louisville

They beat Highlands - so what?

Who did they really beat?

Highlands sucked this year - YAY!!!

Just another reason that social media has made it much harder for kids today. I could go on forever about the evils of social media but it would just be beating a dead horse.

I think some are blowing this out of proportion. Have you ever thought that we just like talking football? No different than what we see and hear everyday on sport talk shows or t.v. Doesn't make what you see on BGP the stone cold truth, no it's opinions and debates. It's like taking the hitting out of the game...Now we want to take the debating out to I mean where is the fun in that???

I'd rather hear someones brutal honesty then a bunch of sugar-coated crap, at least I would know where you stand.......but that's just me, a 50 year old has been. :lol2:
