If I Were A High School Player Today.....

Featured Replies

If I were a high school football player logging on to BGP after this weekend I'd say to myself "Is this what I'm going to turn into as an adult?"

Game threads are filled with adults making sure everyone knows that they don't think such and such team is as good as others do.

Didn't win any big games

Not as good as my Boone County team in the 90s

Not the best Ryle team

Not as good as the Big 3 from Louisville

They beat Highlands - so what?

Who did they really beat?

Highlands sucked this year - YAY!!!

CCH isn't a power

Good lord. I'd fail my classes just so I didn't have to be an adult if I thought this was my destiny.

Just enjoy the competition and the fun of the game, boys. Ignore us morons online who are worried about our past failures or worried that MY school isn't as good as THEIR school.

Congrats to all. From those of us that played we fully respect the commitment.

Ignore SOME, not All......you're painting with a broad brush. :lol2: But, I must admit we are ALL guilty of this is some way.

However, it's just me, but I would use any negative talk as "feeding the flame"

And I sure wouldn't let them in the political forum if they want to learn to cope with a loss or be a gracious winner.

Lifetime friend and high school teammate 50+ years ago is fond of saying.."The older we get, the better we use to be!" Probably speaks only to our memories and not our skills.

Actually it's worse than you describe, Clyde.

Amid all the criticism and bad-mouthing of teams is an equal barrage aimed at individual players. So-and-so is slow, or doesn't have good field (or court) vision, or doesn't play with heart, or has a weak arm, or can't handle the pressure, or is soft compared to players from years' back, or isn't a leader, or can't shoot or has any number of weaknesses and deficiencies that people two and three and four times the kid's age have identified and felt compelled to bring to everybody else's attention.

What, do we think these kids don't know their limitations?

Most of these kids -- who are 14 to 18 years old, remember -- have no intention of pursuing their sport in college, much less as a career. They play for fun, or the camaraderie, or school pride.

And for that they get pummeled.

And when the critics are called out, how do they respond? That by golly this generation is soft and sissified blah blah blah. To that I say: Yeah, and how would we as adults feel if a couple of dozen older, more experienced people tore into our work performance every day? Heck, most of us get all bent out of shape if our boss alone gives us constructive criticism, much less a couple of dozen anonymous strangers just flat out being critical.

In all honesty, I'm VERY think-skinned so have it, it would NOT bother me in the least......but that just me. However, you do make a valid point.

BTW, make work performance is "top notch", except for delivering Printer Parts. :lol2:

I will say this, you can defend your team and dog another team, so be it. BUT I have saw way more than I used of people bashing on kids, which to me is wrong and sad as an adult. I am sure most of these posters were ALL AMERICANS in their day but I do find it odd that some how sites like this have become a breeding ground for the HATERS of the world.

Is it any different in the adult world though? So why should we sugar coat things to high school kids and give them a false sense of how things are? Thats a large reason why things are they way they are with young adults.

If you can't handle criticism from a bunch of nobodys maybe shouldn't play sports?

Actually it's worse than you describe, Clyde.

So should we just lie to them and tell them they are Johnny all start and can play in the NFL one day? Again, why should we lie to these kids. I see nothing wrong with pointing out their flaws, thats how they can get better and work on what they need too, to remove the flaws. Teach them how to take criticism, advice, and public comment and turn it into lessons and improvement.

If you want to criticize and correct flaws please pick up the whistle and coach... You might change a life.

Typical defensive answer you get from someone who cant take criticism.
