I'm loving it, but Matt Smith is extremely distracting for me. It took me a while to take him seriously as Phillip.

 

To be fair that isn't his fault, it is due to his best known previous role.

It's a Netflix original series about the beginning of Queen Elizabeth II's reign. Begins in the last months of King George VI's life. I'm currently 4 episodes in...and I've found the continued aspect of English royal old-guard versus new-guard to be very intriguing. England's global empire is coming to its end. An ailing George VI trying to prepare his family for his death and his daughter for her reign as Queen of England. You've got Winston Churchill trying to hang on to his office as Prime Minister in his old age, Edward Duke of Windsor (who abdicated the throne to George VI) trying to fight for royal money and recognition, Mary of Teck still hanging around trying to kick in her will and nuggets of wisdom from the more traditional monarchical life...

 

Among other things, it never occurred to me that there were ever three Queen's alive at one time in England. QEII may have been the only reigning Queen, but her mother Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon and grandmother Mary of Teck were also both on the scene at the same time.

 

Very interesting. I think you'd dig it.

My wife loves this series, but I've only seen a little bit. Looks pretty good.

Season 2 becomes available on December 8th. Apparently many (most?) of the parts - including the queen - will be recast following season 2 in order to portray the course of aging.

Matt Smith already looks like he's 60, they could leave him in season 3.

I enjoyed the first series. Lithgow was fantastic. I'll keep watching to see where things go from here.

Almost two weeks after the fact...completely forgot that Netflix released the second season back on 12/8.

Season 3 comes out on November 17th. They have officially changed up the cast to reflect the aging characters. Olivia Colman will star a Queen Elizabeth. She was absolutely fantastic in Broadchurch and The Favourite, so I'm pretty confident the role is in good hands.

Has everyone continued watching? We finished Season 4 last week and I cannot get enough. To sound British, the show is simply brilliant.
