So with 22 players on offense and defense plus special teams you think that Fleming would not have another kid besides their QB even take the field if he played for Belfry? Come on now, that may be stretching it a bit. I know Belfry is great, believe me I know that. But Fleming county does have a few good athletes that I believe could and would contribute for Belfry. Morgan county was terrible this year, and I'm pretty sure that two of their kids could play for even Belfry on either side of the ball. I know Fleming has better players than Morgan did this year so I am doubting that statement you made. Sorry just what I think. BTW, I think Belfry wins class 3A and rolls through everyone. They are loaded.

I agree with you, things like that are very hard to judge. It's like saying that certain players from the 60's or 70's couldn't play with today's athletes. Whose to say that is true or not? You know Fleming county better than I do, so I will take your word that they would have at least 3 players get some playing time for Belfry. But do you see what I am saying? Who knows who is capable of playing for other teams?

Analysis:

 

Fleming hasn't seen anything in the realm of Belfry this season, or for that matter since these kids have been playing in High School. Fleming has seen big lines (Russell this year), they have seen good skill players (Lucasville Valley two years ago), they have seen power running teams (Greenup this year), they have seen elite play makers (Lawrence County last year).. but they haven't seen all of them wrapped into one with the elite level star power on top that Belfry has.

 

Haywood will play this game very conservatively. On Defense it's going to be the 3-man front with Ends standing up as OLB and dropping in the flats and the occasional blitzing LB. On Offense it is going to be a generic playbook, no real wrinkles to give potential foes free scouting.

 

Fleming will struggle up front with Belfry and the Pirates running game should be steady as she goes. Fleming should be able to hit some throws, especially if Crump can bide some time..and they may be able to get some first downs on the ground with Belfry defense geared toward the pass. The thing to watch will be what happens when Horton and company force the QB to scramble for his life... against lesser foes he can reverse field twice and find his man..against Belfry that may end up a 25 yard loss. Also those risks he takes may end up becoming 6 points the other way with Catron, Woolum, Varney, and Wellman.

For those who have seen Fleming play, how good is QB Josh Crump?

 

He is completing a little over 50% of his passes for 221 yards and 2.5 TD per game.

 

What other HS quarterback would you compare him to?

 

He is a solid athlete with a good arm. Fleming lives by the pass. They do more 7 on 7 than any team in the area and have great timing.

 

With that said the only passes that they have a shot to complete will be quick hitters. Belfry's front will be in his lap twice as fast as anyone they have seen. He is not going to have time to go deep.

The big difference I saw in the players was the lack of physical play from Fleming. Lawrence was much more physical of the two and Belfry plays a physical aggressive hard nosed style. I am not sure Fleming's kids would transfer over to that style well.

That may be true. I do know Belfry is big and very physical. Just thought Fleming may have a few athletes that could find the field for a team like Belfry.

I think Fleming's style of play makes people assume they are not physical. The fact that they rush for over 150 yards a game (they rushed for over 300 against Lawtence) while holding a run heavy schedule to under 100 on the average, tells me they must play a little physical.

Top 5 is debateable, but it is a debate you could have

 

Don't think they would beat Bowling Green but think they would probably play them better than any other 5A team

When people say they could win all six classes they are grossly underestimating how good Trinity and BG are this year.

 

As evidence by the Knoxville Catholic game (a similar Top 100 team Nationally and a pretty fair comp to a Bowling Green). Belfry simply has not proven they are quite to that level

Johnson Central played great everywhere but the red zone.

 

The Eagles made several big plays. Neither team had much success sustaining drives on the ground the way they prefer.

 

Johnson Central had a fumble in the redzone on a hustle Belfry strip, an ill advised INT in the back of the end zone, and a botched trip that they turned it over on downs when Matney assumed a failed 4th Down that was bailed out my an incidental facemask had resulted in an automatic 1st and Goal.

 

The Eagles doubled Belfry up in total yardage but the majority of their production seemingly came on about 5 big plays (80 yard TD run to open game, long TD pass to Blanton, another long pass to Blanton tackled inside the 10, long pass to Frisby when primary was covered.

 

I don't think it is fair to say Belfry played bad either. Johnson Central's defense played great is the better description. They completely shut down the option and Corbett as a running threat and rendered Andrew Fletcher to basically 2 yards per carry.

 

If you want to put a positive spin on the Belfry effort and make an excuse I would not go with "played bad" but rather "played conservatively". Haywood's already small playbook was condensed to maybe 5 total plays and he didn't ask his HB's to do very much. Despite JC owning Belfry's option on 3rd and Medium, Haywood only attempted one pass all night as well. When i think of Belfry "playing bad" I think of fumbles and penalties. Neither of those really killed Belfry, the wounds that they suffered were sustained by JC making plays on D.

 

JC, OTOH, seemed the polar opposite. Where Haywood erred on being overly conservative JC may have went a bit too open in their Offensive playbook. Matney dialed up 20 passes with his Freshman QB, five or six variations of trick plays, and routinely erred on the side of outside runs or passes in the redzone which I felt ultimately hindered their success.

 

Where Haywood seemingly didn't want people to see his whole arsenal on Offense (two or three staple plays to the Belfry Offense I don't even think he ever used a single time), I got the sense Matney was dying for potential opponents to see his (extra prep time, soften the box).
