What would cause a beer bottle to explode?

Featured Replies

I have had a bottle of GoodWood for at least one year. It has been in my utility room but for some reason unknown to me, Grandma moved it to the kitchen counter today while babysitting. Well tonight I was standing next to my couch and I hear a loud explosion of glass. I proceed to the kitchen and see the bottle had exploded. I then looked back towards the couch where I stood and saw the top of the bottle on the floor, right next to where I stood. Luckily it didn't hit me as it would have done serious damage if not life threatening. I have no idea why it would explode. It hadn't gone through any temperature changes and although I'm not a scientist I would think CO2 would dissipate over the course of a year plus. Any thoughts on this?

A girl beer?

Huh?

The beer may not have been done fermenting when bottled. That would cause a lot of carbonation/pressure to build up in the bottle.

It's a fairly common thing to happen to people who brew their own beer. They're called bottle bombs.

I once had GoodWood for a year. I felt like mine was going to explode too. Divorce sucks.

Excess carbonation and not enough head space possibly? Could Grandma possibly dropped it or knocked it over to add to the pressure?

This.

+ GoodWood makes some crappy beer. It probably saved you from a worse experience.

Found out the reason the bottle was on the counter. Apparently the other bottle I had exploded earlier in the day. The odds of this happening have to be small and for both to explode on the same day seems like a lotto ticket.

Hey now, it was a Christmas present. I did like their rum barreled Octoberfest.
