Surprise teams in class 5A this season

Featured Replies

Who would be your surprise teams in class 5A this season and what surprises you the most about their season thus far? This can be a team(s) that have overachieved or a team(s) that has underachieved.

Fairly close to home, Montgomery County has gone from 7-4 last season to 1-7 this time around.

On December 20th of last year if someone had told me that 10 months later Highlands would be hoping to finally scratch out their second win of the season against Grant County, and that CCH would be 6-2 with victories over Highlands and two Ohio teams, I would have been surprised.

Montgomery County certainly comes as a surprise. When working on the preseason preview, I had Montgomery County as one of the 11-15 teams in my rough draft. After some more research, they didn't make the final top 15 cut. But none the less, their season has been a bit of a surprise to me.

I'm completely with you on that one, Covington Catholic has been a pleasant surprise. Highlands on the other hand has been disappointing and I'm not so sure they haven't just packed it in for the season. District 5 is full of surprises this season, I never would have thought that Dixie Heights would be fighting it out with Covington Catholic for the district championship this week either.

I don't know if you would call Greenwood a "surprise" or not, but they are a crazy endzone bobble catch away from being undefeated and regardless of what happens tomorrow at BG have been pretty eye-opening for me. They either didn't get in the BGP Preseason rankings or just made it at #10, so not alot was expected. They have climbed to a legitimate #3 in the rankings and getting a win in Week 2 of the Playoffs would be HUGE for the club. Of course beating BG would be More Than Huge!

I was just getting ready to mention Greenwood, then I hit refresh and noticed your post. Greenwood came in at 10th in the preseason rankings and finished 11th last season. I had a feeling they would move up as the season progressed, but I didn't expect that they would be where they are now. Honestly, what hurt them in the preseason rankings is their one dimensional nature. Most, myself included, thought that would hurt them in the long run. But so far, they have been able to line up, tell you that they're gonna run the ball and have been very successful in doing so.

I hope your right, it would certainly make for a good story and something to remember from this season. Gotta say though, I'm just not seeing it. I've been proven wrong more than once though.

I completely understand and agree but a girl can hope lol.

Cov Cath is somewhat of a surprise for me. I expected them to be better this season than last, but they have done more than I thought they would. Coach Eviston has them going in the right direction and they will only get better IMO. I know they lost to Ryle in the first game of the season, but I think that both are probably even now.

Greenwood does have the same record as last year though at this point. The only difference in 2015 Greenwood and 2016 Greenwood records is who they lost to. I think this year's edition is definitely better, but I think one reason for the ranking disparity versus last year is that in 2015 no one could get themselves to fully buy in to Greenwood. This year, people have bought in. And rightfully so - Greenwood is a very good team. Like the Warren Central lament of so many years, it's just a shame they have to be stuck in a region with Bowling Green (along with strong Owensboro and Christian County).
