Mayfield 35 Hopkinsville 34

Featured Replies

On a side note, our top offensive and defensive lineman, Heath (only returning starter from a year ago) went down with what appears to be a severe knee injury in the first half and never returned.

He is a monster, I remember him from last year. Hope he's O.K.

How did the freshman running back do?

I didn't make itto the game but caught it on the radio. Mayfield was a step behind in the first half. Hoptown was up 28-13 in the third quarter. Mayfield's defense gave up some big plays but stood strong at the end and made stops when they needed to. The onside kick was huge. And then what a kick. Credit to the cards for not quitting even when down 15 against Hoptown!!!! What a comeback. Shelton was a leader and thier O_line stepped it up in the second half, even when Landon Heath went out most of the half with an injury. What happened tonight takes heart.....and the cards certainly have that. Now whats up with that AP #7 class A ranking?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?

Great win by the Cards...This team never quit and seemed to really control the game in the 2nd half...Shelton played one of his best games of his career..He's a serious weapon with his arms , legs and now being a 3 yr starter, his leadership...His stats were 13-21, 173 yds and 1 td thru the air and had 16 carries for 106 yds and 2 scores on the ground...The Cardinal line did a great job giving him time to throw and he threw some bullets all over the field...If this Cardinal team can get there defense to stop arm tackling and improve some in the secondary, this team could be special by the end of the year...

Will there be another Danville/Bardstown vs Mayfield semi this year? Seems possible.

I think Region 1, Mayfield is a surety. In our Region, I'm becoming concerned about Holy Cross (again), which seems to have developed an offense to go with those behemoths on defense. Frankfort is lurking, too.

Good point. We've had some incredibly entertaining close games with both of those squads.

Hopkinsville's defense wasn't great but exleast tonight they competed. Hoptown made some changes defensively that I think will help them as the season goes. Right now the defense is like a ugly sister that you wanna fix up on a date but you don't want nobody to see her until they get there. Mayfield completed 3 4th downs and about 4-5 3rd and longs.

Adam Shelton's refusal to lose it was this game boiled down to.

E.T. and Chris Thomas (Hopkinsville) showed their big play abilities. Michael Atkinson WR (Hopkinsville) right now can't catch a cold. It's a disappointment because he had a good offseason and summer. Tonight he dropped 3 balls that would have moved the chains. In a few weeks Hoptown will get Antwain Loving back and he will take pressure off Atkinson on the oher side.

Any loss is disappointing but tonight the Tigers played with emotion and effort unlike last week. Last week they looked like a JV team but showed improvement this week.

The only part of this win I hated was that good ole TigerTalker had to be on the L side, tiger I hope my pm did the trick

HAd the pleasure of listening to Dave Routen and Paaul Leahy after game was over on the drive home, man oh man, are Mayfield fans fortunatee to have what has to be the best HS football announcers in America, it took them 30 minutes to summarize up all the game action

Are toothpick, westsider, and cardsvoice all still alive, or have they had heart attacks?

I am still alive...barely....MAN OH MAN what a high school football game between two western kentucky powers. Great game, great atmosphere and great ending. Shame that one of these two teams had to walk out with a loss on paper...I say that because they way they fought it seems dissrespectful to say that any team lost last night. Only downer is that Heath may be out for a few weeks, or the season, depending on what tests reveal on his knee as he was back on crutches during the 2nd half so I am hoping that means just a strain or sprain on the knee instead of the those dreaded three letters...MCL.

Admiral...congratulations on the ADS big win...and yes it is nice to see the 1A boys take care of business last night.

Hearsay always good hearing from you as you are one classy fan of high school football. Good luck to Bardstown this year...should be an interesting year with the teams shaping up they way they are...here's hoping all the teams stay healthy all year long.

Gonna go pass out know...lol.

Okay here is a quick summary

Hoptown takes opening drive and scores but get extra point blocked (1 of 3 extra points blocked by Mayfield on the night. Mayfield takes opening drive and scores and gets extra point blocked. Eventually Hoptown gets out to a 2 score advantage going into the half. Mayfield in the second half slowly fought back and late in the 4th the Cards score with a minute and change or so to go to make score 34-32 Hoptown, the Cards go for 2 and dont make it. They kick an onside kick that bounces off a Hoptown player and the Cards recover on their side of the field 47 yard line I think. With no timeouts the Cards work the sidelines and eventually get to the Hoptwon 27 (with about 20 seconds to go) where they bring in kicker Tommy McNutt who boots a 44 yard field goal to take the lead for the first time all night and the eventual win

Good summary pick, I can't really add any more except, GO BIG RED!! When I was going home I heard Vince Dawson say that he believes that this game could have been the best game in the history of War Memorial!! I know it is up there with one of the best games I have ever seen Mayfield play. I too was glad to see Landon come back on the field with the crutches, here's to hoping huh. This years team has so much heart and it really showed last night, too bad it couldn't come out in a win in the marshall game last week. The Taylor kid truly is something to see, like a big refrigerator going down the field, we had no answer to him or the QB, who seems to move like the Williams boy from Marshall. Our running game did well at the first half and then HopTown adjusted well in the second half and Mayfield had to go to the passing game which looks to be doing well, very impressive night for Adam Shelton!! What a heartbreaker he had on the 2 pt conv. where he just came up a yard shy or so. Well, I am still pinching myself to make sure I am not dreaming, what a big win for this young Cardinal team!!

I think the hits our Mayfield boys made on that onsides kick were heard all over town, man, there was some pads poppin on that play for sure.:ylsuper: Looks like the Mayfield/Graves is gonna be yet another sellout with them coming in from a big win over Tilghman.

Yes they did and thank you! You can't win them all but there is no shame in a loss to Mayfield. Some of the Hoptown kids need to look at the way Adam Shelton played last night and put out the same effort. I've seen some great Mayfield players over the years but I was more impressed with Shelton last night then any others. He wasn't going to let Mayfield lose and his attitude rubbed off onto the rest of the players.

Has the Heath kid had injury problems in the past? It seems like they've had a Heath on their roster every year and I thought last year or in 04 a Heath was out with a injury.

Not the same heath...that was his brother 2 years ago, who suffered a season ending injury...This years version is a huge loss as he is the only returning o-lineman and plays both ways, definately the best lineman the Cards have, so, him being out any substantial time is really a big blow...hopefully it's not serious

Man, what a game...hats off to Hoptown, they are a class act! I had a feeling about this game and really think that this Mayfield team has the fight and heart to do special things! I don't remember a game where Mayfield converted so many 3rd & longs, and two 4th downs in a astounding effort to pull out the game!

McNutt at K and Aaron Williams at P are huge weapons to have!

On Landon Heath, it is a serious knee injury most likely an ACL...MRI today I believe, hate to see that and our thoughts are with him and his family!
