I get that the fans don't know the rules, but I'm amazed at how many coaching staffs don't know the running clock rule. Watching Paintsville/Pike Central and numerous coaches are calling for the clock to run even during timeouts, etc. It stops on touchdowns, penalties, timeouts, and injuries. It shouldn't be running during PATs, even though Paintsville's coaches want that and are fussing at the press box to do it.

One other thing: the white hat is the only person on the field who matters. Scoreboard operator only does what the white hat says.

That's a pet peeve of mine too. The rules are clearly printed.

 

I think the white hats don't know the rule particulars sometimes either or, more likely, just choose to ignore them.

We had 8 games last year in which we had running clocks. Only one time was the rule correctly followed and it was a game in which the clock probably should have ran the fastest. How about asking the losing team how the want it ran if they want it ran faster?

A rule is a rule. However, if both teams agreed to something I think that's fine. However the press box should be notified and the PA should make the fans aware.

Have done chain gang duty for years and I still hear "uncatchable" shouted by coaches whenever a pass interference is called when the pass is a terrible throw.

Both teams stood over the ball in the 4th letting the clock roll in the rain, probably want their team healthy next week for districts? Chirico gives his starters until a running clock, and then they come out. The fact that you have to go for 2 to secure a running clock at 36, that is the ignorant portion of the rule. If I were in charge of the clock, its raining, 90% of people left, both teams standing over the ball, then im using common sense and running it until they tell me to stop it! Everybody in the facility just wanted the game over in the 4th but the clock operator!

You are correct! However, I know of crews that are really lax in applying the rule correctly. I believe there is some shared responsibility between both parties

If it is out of control a good referee will get it over as soon and as safe as he can.

Whats worse is when refs say it was an uncatchable pass!
