neilman1234 Posted September 22, 2016 Posted September 22, 2016 This show could not be more disappointing. I've always felt that Simmons was too bright of a talent who was handcuffed by a PG rated ESPN network. He was muzzled due to ESPN's numerous relationships with the NFL, NBA, etc. He gets the perfect stage (HBO) to do something fresh and creative, without recourse, and he delivers this turd on a platter. This show could not be any more basic and boring. To say this show is a huge disappointment is an understatement. Agree or disagree?
Jumper_Dad Posted September 22, 2016 Posted September 22, 2016 Agree, mostly. I like most of the interviews but they seem unnaturally short. I'd be happy with a 5 minute monolog and 25 minute interview with one person or group. Seems to be trying to pack 10lb in a 5lb bag...it just isn't working.
Clyde Posted September 23, 2016 Posted September 23, 2016 Disagree. I didn't enjoy the first two weeks but have enjoyed them since.
Big Slick Posted September 23, 2016 Posted September 23, 2016 I was excited at first but it's just ok now. I watch but I watch on dvr when nothing else to watch.

It seems like Bill cuts off his interviews too quickly and moves on. Poor editing?
SnottieDrippen Posted September 23, 2016 Posted September 23, 2016 30 minutes is too short for Simmons. We're talking about the dude who wrote a 15,000 word piece to save a team he had no rooting interest in. The guy needs time and space to go off on the tangents that make his writing and podcasts so enjoyable.
Jim Schue Posted September 23, 2016 Posted September 23, 2016 Haven't watched any of them. I prefer him as a writer.

SnottieDrippen Posted September 23, 2016 Posted September 23, 2016 I've noticed that too. It seems like Bill cuts off his interviews too quickly and moves on. Poor editing? Definitely. I bet they film 15 minutes to a half hour or more with each guest and only air 5 minutes. There's no sense of continuity even within a single interview. His podcasts are much better. Agreed. I think they compare favorably to his writing as well.
MentschTrachtGottLacht Posted September 23, 2016 Posted September 23, 2016 His NBA Draft articles, and his mailbag segments, were absolute MUST READS back in the day.
Jim Schue Posted September 23, 2016 Posted September 23, 2016 His NBA Draft articles, and his mailbag segments, were absolute MUST READS back in the day. Don't forget the classic sports movie reviews. Still love where he watched "Hoosiers" with the intent to construct a box score for the state final game.
neilman1234 Posted September 24, 2016 Author Posted September 24, 2016 If you get a chance, google his 'Bane of the Ballpark' article from the early 2000's. I revisit that piece at least once a year. Very funny and accurate.

Jim Schue Posted October 7, 2016 Posted October 7, 2016 Can this be found anywhere? This is the link. But I warn you, ESPN's loathing over its former favorite son made it difficult to get it to stop on that article without redirecting. ESPN.com: Page 2 : Bane of the ballpark
