September 6, 201610 yr Any reason why? I am not assuming like the others that you are asking why he did charity work, but why the Reds decided to recognize him. From what I gathered Bruce and his family went above and beyond what most professional ball players do in regards to community and charity work. He had Bruce's battalion where he would give tickets to military families. He's also had Bruce's Buddies, which I think gave tickets to Best Buddy programs. Along with a lot of other work too. Seemed like a nice "Thank You" from the Reds organization for all this charitable work, which also highlighted his first major league hit, most HR's at GABP and the walk-off to win the division in 2010.

This is something you do during a farewell season, not mid career.
September 6, 201610 yr They did a smaller scale, quick tribute last season when Cueto came back with KC after being traded. It's a nice, small gesture the organization does for players who have been vital parts of the organization.

I think it was mainly because a.) you didn't know when he was going to be traded, until he actually was...and then it was too late for the fans to say "goodbye", and b.) this was his first game back at GABP. I have zero problem giving the fans of this year's Reds a chance to show their appreciation for a guy who's been a fixture in right for all these years.
