Pulaski Southwestern 34 Somerset 28

Featured Replies

I really feel that Southwestern is overated. I think the Franklin county team we played last Saturday would destroy Southwesterns terrible defense. Good game for the Warriors. However this isn't a team that will make a strong push in the 3A playoffs. Somerset grew up a lot this game looked like a different team. They flew to the ball and hit people. Tackling still not great but a lot better then last week. They continue to play and grow up week by week, this team will contend again this year.

Yeah, real terrible considering they only gave up hmm.. -11 rushing yards!

14 or 15 catches for 202 yards and 4 touchdowns by one player is a shredding. I didn't say Somerset shredded SW's defense I said that DEATON TO COLE shredded SW's SECONDARY. Otherwise I felt SW had a very solid defense and those were not coverage sacks. The sacks and the interceptions were a direct result of SW getting a good push from the inside and forcing Deaton to roll out where he is not nearly as effective. SW as of this moment (they've got some kids back there that can play so they can improve) has a horrendous secondary against the deep ball. Danville threw for 240 yards and 4 scores on only 9 completions, Somerset completed 4 touchdowns to one player, all but one on deep balls. The SW secondary plays real well on the slants and underneath routes but if given time a decent quarterback/receiver combo can go over the top all night. Overall I was impressed with the size and quickness of SW's line and running backs. However, if they want to make a deep run in the playoffs in 3A they've got to improve their kicking game and secondary, if two 1A schools can throw for 500 yards and 8 scores what will a 3A team like Highlands or Franklin Co. do. That said I hope they shore things up and make a run this year and I agree I hope the 2 schools get to play yearly with the district changes next year. Good luck the rest of the year.

SPEED kills. Cole and most of Danville's receivers have it. Almost all of Cole's receptions were intermediate passes and then, like all good receivers, he got results after the catch with his speed.

I would have hated to have been either of Cole or Deaton on Saturday morning. They took a beating all night long. Been there and done that.

Well played game on both sides of the ball. Thought it was great to see football in Somerset at that level of excitement. Made me think I was back in high school playing when Somerset was the only show in town. What a night for local football. It can only get better as the teams improve. Thanks to all who made it possible.

I think that this was a combination of Southwestern's run defense and Somerset's so far lack of a running game. When you have a great team and great program like Southwestern and your expectations are high, people are going to be more critical of your teams performance.

I think that this was a combination of Southwestern's run defense and Somerset's lack of a running game. Someone else needs to step up and take some pressure off of Kenny Hughes and TB.

Danville had only 58 yards rushing against the warrior Defense, last saturday night...so give credit where its due.

Danville put themselves in that position by putting the ball on the ground. Southwestern had alot to do with the turnovers too. But Danville has a stable of backs and when they take care of the ball they are hard to stop. I think Somerset will have trouble containing the outside against Danville and will get burned bad and often.

Do they have a running game?

I think Somerset is going to be hurting come playoff time if they can't develop a running game. If they run up against a solid secondary that can shut Cole down, they will be in trouble. In my past experience, both as a player and a coach, you have to be able to do both, run and pass, to be able to consistently win.

Don't take this the wrong way, I expect and hope Somerset plays well in upcoming games. I just feel, in MHO, they need to get closer to 50% run v. pass.

IMO SW is in a no win situation other then the score board when it comes to playing SHS.

If they win then they should of won, if they lose they lost to a class A team, if they play them tough then they aren't as good as they are supposed to be.

A WIN IS A WIN IS A WIN. SHS always plays SW tough as history points out.

SW came out flat case closed. SW is as good as advertised and will show it thru out the season.

Good luck to SHS as they have a great football player at WR.

Southwestern, Somerset, Pulaski Co. all local teams. We should be fans of all three unless your playing one another. This one is over and done and what a great game it was. One had to win and the other had to lose just the way it is. The being critical part is what gets me. If every player on every team did their job every time the ball would remain in the middle of the field going no where. It's kids like Cole and Deaton for Somerset and kids like Jones and Hampton for Southwestern that make the difference. Great line play great linebacker play great receiver play is why the games are played. Let's hope all three teams do well and are successful each and every year and let's let the critics be from outside the county and let's give them the "smack talk" until the game is over.

You seem to have some chip on your shoulder because I'm not a SW hater... I'm a fan of ALL local teams and will support them throughout. I'll give credit to Southwesterns run D but the fact still remains that the pass D needs to improve alot to make a deep run into the playoffs. Coach Anderson is a great coach and I'm sure he would relate to you the same, giving up 700+ yards passing in two games isnt going to get it done with the power 3A teams.

:scared: WOW! is it really over 700 yards passing against us. I just looked up stats it's still a lot but just over 500 yards. Danville had three plays over 60 plus yards. Somerset had two I believe.

I couldn't have said it any better.....:thumb: Great post! These kids grow up knowing and playing together, as fans or parents we need to support all programs in the county.

You're right LTW it is right at 500 yards, (not 700)about 240 for Danville and 260 for Somerset. The problem is the number of big plays, Danville's yardage (and 4 tds) came on only 9 completions (almost 27 yards a completion) and on all 4 of Cole's tds except 1 he was behind the secondary and really didn't have to break any tackles or anything. They did manage to keep Somerset in front of them more as Cole's 15 catches show (and if Somerset throws it short any team will have a hard time limiting Coles catches) they just have to do better on the deep ball.

SW is a big, physical team and their running game was very impressive. Were it not for the 2 early turnovers I think they would have beaten Somerset by 2-3 touchdowns. However, I don't quite think their are as good as their preseason rating yet. You can't give up 8 tds through the air to two class 1A teams (no matter where they're ranked) and expect to be considered a top ten 3A football team. The good thing about that is they've got the next 8 games to get that straightened out--and I hope they do. I'd like to see them get the monkey off their backs come playoff time and win the region--I think Boyle is vunerable this year--if SW can stop the pass I think they can make it to at least the semi-state.

PS:I had this on an earlier post but what is wrong with SW's kicking game. Is someone hurt or are there just no true kickers in this age group. I know it seems like a lot of teams use soccer players for kickers anymore so a lot of the football only kids don't really learn how to do it.

I'm here to eat crow about the 700 yards passing against SW :creepy: . I didn't have the stats in front of me, I thought that Danville had thrown around 300 and Somerset 300 +.

Good luck to both teams the rest of the season.

The kickers have not had proper amount of practice days to play in a game.

The new kicker who alot will know from the basketball court is Jonathan Edwards. He can flat out kick a football.
