Specious argument. Henderson County and PL Dunbar have male enrollments that double some of the smaller 6A schools and they are not even close to dominant. Male is one of the smaller 6A schools and yet they seem to do OK.

Oh I agree, and it might look superficial but you still have a better chance by having more to choose from. And I'm sure it all comes down to how you handle that advantage.

You really seem to have a problem with NKY 6A teams, what has anyone other than a single poster said that makes you think NKY teams aren't grounded in reality? What I overwhelmingly hear is that they realize they aren't ready to compete with the top Louisville teams. Everyone is aware of their record in championship games.

I believe the scheduling Marksberry did over the past 8 years or so as he built Simon Kenton up was actually very good. It is a model other struggling football programs should look at. However, the program is now established as an annual contender in 6A. If they want to take the next step to winning a title, they need to push themselves higher. At this point, Simon Kenton would benefit much more playing a top tier 4A or higher school. The rest of their schedule this year is pretty good.

I believe the over abundance of 6 A Schools in a limited area is going to be an issue when it comes to competing with Louisville area schools. Kids and families have a lot more choices when it comes to quality education and good football programs in Nky. Louisville area education numbers are always lower than Nky schools. When the top athletes are spread thin because of choice you are going to have a tough time competing against schools where options are limited. SK is a powerhouse in Nky and a competitor statewide but consider them as building their program when compared to Trinity. Given enough time they will catch up.

This! If they don't do to Kenton what they've done to Boone and close open enrollment, or build a new school or even close the district stuff they do over there where a kid in Kenton can go to any school they choose without tuition. If any of those things happen, it starts to hamper SK, some more than others.

 

I like SK being good. I'm just not ready to call them one of the best programs in the state just yet. They've had a few good season dominating NKy 6a teams that everyone knew was down for awhile. They haven't been able to do much in the playoffs against the weaker side of the bracket for years and their schedule tends to be a little soft for me (for a 6a team wanting statewide respect). They are right there! But I need a little more convincing or a statement win/season before I start labeling them one of the best in the state. I know...the Louisville power teams are in 6a so give them a break. If they were making it to the finals on the weak side of the bracket every year and getting beat by those powerhouses, then I would be right there with them. But they aren't making to those powerhouses, so you can't use that defense in their case. A top program would have made it to the finals over the last couple years and been beaten by the other side of the bracket. If that would have happened, I would be calling them one of the best in the state. But they really haven't done anything significant to be labeled that yet. I know "you're just a hater". That's not true. I would love to see a NKy team carry the torch. But if you want reality, tell me what they've done? I truly don't think they do enough to prepare themselves for the tough run of the 6a playoffs. JMO "Again, they ain't losin to T, X and Male every year." An they aren't losing to the same program that just "happens to have their number". Not that any Pioneer fan cares, but I just need a little more before I label a top team.

SK played Ohio teams in the past. Hopefully they can play one or two next year.

To RCC9's post above, there was an interesting quote in today's football preview by Walton's coach. I am paraphrasing but something like ... You don't want to face the best team you have seen all year in the playoffs. That is a recipe for failure.

 

I believe that is true. If you want playoff success, try to get at least one team on your schedule that you think is better than any team you might face in the playoffs. That gets more difficult for the 6A schools but is still a good goal to shoot for.

 

As to scheduling Ohio schools, it is going to be tougher for SK now that the program is where it is. Ohio schools want to schedule the best team they know they can beat. That helps them in the Harbin ratings used for playoff eligibility and seeding. SK may not be able to get anyone other than a GCL or similar quality team to schedule them. Those Ohio schools do not want a loss and that hit to their Harbin rank.
