Dem Platform Alienates Dems

Featured Replies

An article in the Los Angeles Times points out there is a radical plank in the Democratic platform that is even too left for Barack O'Bama.

The platform calls for repealing the Hyde Amendment which would make way for tax-payer funding for abortion on demand. Not even O'Bama has endorsed this. But it is where the Democrat party is and it is alienating moderate Dems.

How about some of those prolife Dems voting for Hillary on BGP or some of you Catholic Dems--can you still vote for Hillary and those Democrats running for Congress who will push for tax-payer funded abortions?

Here's the article, written by the Executive Director of Democrats for Life, and some quotes: How the Democratic platform betrays millions of the party faithful - LA Times

Most significantly, the platform calls for the repeal of the Hyde and Helms amendments, which prevent taxpayer funds from being used to pay for abortions. This would force those who object to abortion to contribute to what we believe would be government-funded killing, and it would eradicate policies that have already saved hundreds of thousands of lives.

Platforms are sometimes ignored, but they are hard-fought outlines of each party's character and often signal a party’s future trajectory. The 2016 Democratic platform is a flat-out betrayal of millions of Democrats, undoing policies that have kept us in the party working toward common progressive goals on a host of other issues.

...

“As a feminist and a mother, I find it troubling that the Democrats have such extreme views in support of abortion,” said Jeanne-Nicole Saint-Laurent, an assistant professor at Marquette University. “I'd never support Trump, but if the Democrats had a more moderate position on abortion it would be easier to support Clinton. I just can't support the violence of abortion.”

The future of the Democratic Party depends on its diversity, its ability to remain inclusive. The 2016 platform language on abortion torpedoes those goals. When Democratic Sen. Joe Manchin III of West Virginia heard about the platform's call to repeal the Hyde amendment he had a succinct response: “That’s crazy.” We couldn’t say it any better.

I am pro-choice within the 1st 3 months however I agree that the government should not be funding abortion.

As a basis of comparison, the GOP platform calls for a ban on all abortions -- no exceptions for rape, incest or health of mother.

There's no middle ground, each party has staked out far left and far right positions. Choose your poison.

A perfect example of why a third party has really never been more needed. Everyone just seems to keep moving further away from each other. We need a moderate party option.

If you find yourself in complete agreement with everything in a party platform, it's time to turn off the TV and start reading books again. I've never found a party, politician, or platform in my life that I agreed with every word of. The left's tolerance of abortion is certainly the part of the Democratic platform I struggle with the most as a member of the party.

Find me a true pro-life party (human dignity from conception to natural death) and I'll support it. Both major parties are complicit in what Pope John Paul II called the "culture of death."

Maybe I read over, but were their stipulations?

Was it basic choice or in cases of rape, incest, mother's health, infant's health?

Seems if a mother had govt healthcare and fell into the above categories I can understand.

I just read the GOP 2016 platform on protecting human life and it says nothing like you claim. It presents a very reasonable position on protecting human life. I believe the vast majority of Americans would agree with it. The only party with an extreme position is the Democrat party. The GOP protects the life of an infant born alive during an attempted abortion. Something, then Senator Barack O'Bama failed to support when he had the chance. How radical is that?

Read the platform and then decide which party has a radical stance on abortion. Common sense and compassionate is how I would describe the GOP statement.

Here it is. Go to page 13 of the document, under the heading, The Fifth Amendment: Protecting Human Life:

The final paragraph of that section contrasts the GOP position from the Democrat position.

The Democratic Party is extreme on abortion. Democrats’ almost limitless support for abortion, and their strident opposition to even the most basic restrictions on abortion, put them dramatically out of step with the American people. Because of their opposition to simple abortion clinic safety procedures, support for taxpayer-funded abortion, and rejection of pregnancy resource centers that provide abortion alternatives, the old Clinton mantra of “safe, legal, and rare” has been reduced to just “legal.” We are proud to be the party that protects human life and offers real solutions for women.

Where does the GOP platform promote a "culture of death"? It protects human life from conception to natural death, including a statement on stem cells. All consistent with Catholic teaching. Only one party's platform will protect nearly a million pre-born infants from abortion. Only one party protects the aged and ill from euthanasia.

Someone said "pick your poison" as if the two major parties' platforms are equally offensive regarding this issue. Choosing life is not poison. The Dem platform is poison.

However, anyone that disagrees with the GOP position is not required to fund something in which they don't believe.

I won't deny that there is absolutely no single issue as problematic in the GOP platform as abortion on demand is to the Democratic Platform. I joined the GOP (the party of my father) when I first registered to vote as a high school student but was unable to shake the sense that I was being led around by the nose (due to my pro-life beliefs) and being forced to sign on to a bunch of nonsense in order to remain in a pro-life party. But even that was illusory. I started to notice the rest.

In my years as an active voter, I have seen conservative candidates that embraced the death penalty, torture of combatants, barbaric prison conditions, economic conditions that tear families apart and treats people like cogs in a machine, jobs at the expense of a living wage, and foreign policy that could most generously be described as mind-numbingly reckless. Does that sound like "human dignity from conception to natural death" to you?

Then in the year the Democrats nominate someone who ought to be completely unelectable, the GOP manages to nominate Donald J. Trump, the living embodiment of Mammon.

I loathe the horror of abortion. I'll continue to pray for its end and search for candidates that feel the same way I do...

But I'm done pretending the GOP platform on abortion absolves them of their complicity in horrors around the world and here at home. Feed that line to someone else.

Find below a copy and paste of a story that appeared in theblaze.com in April of this year. The story notes that Trump's personal stance on abortion (three exceptions) is at odds with the GOP platform (no exceptions).

On NBC’s “Today” Thursday, Trump was asked, “Would you want to change the Republican platform so that exceptions would be made on abortions in the case of rape, incest or to save the life of the mother?”

Trump was clear in his answer.

“Yes, I would. Absolutely, for the three exceptions, I would,” he said.

Trump didn’t go beyond those exceptions. He was also asked, “Would you have an exception for the health of the mother?”

“I would leave it for the life of the mother, but I would absolutely have the three exceptions,” Trump said.

Since 1980, the Republican Party platform has included a “Sanctity and Dignity of Human Life” plank. National delegates have kept the plank in every subsequent convention.

Republican nominees John McCain in 2008 and Mitt Romney in 2012 both supported a right to life amendment, with the same three exceptions. However, neither candidate sought to change the party platform’s language, as Trump has ....

I am with you on Trump--good description of him. As has been pointed out many times, he ain't Republican. Hopefully, those Republicans running for office further down the on the ticket are more in line with conservative policies.

Regarding the bolded: I am supportive of the death penalty but would gladly trade it to end abortion. I am against torture and said so when it came out that the U.S. was using it during GW's presidency. Republican John McCain also spoke against it. I'm against barbaric prison conditions. The economic policies that have done the most to destroy families and treats people like cogs in a machine are advocated by Democrats. Look at the destruction of the Black family in America. 300 years of systemic racism was unable to do what many of the policies that have been enacted since the 1960's have done to the African-American family. Jobs at the expense of a living wage--this is an economic issue that I can only recommend for you to read Economic Facts and Fallacies by Sowell. Living Wage rhetoric sounds comapassionate but will wreak economic havoc. If you want to keep people poor, let the government fiddle with the economy. The only places in the world where the common man has risen above a subsistence existence has been places where free market principles have been enacted to some degree. You won't have a middle class without it. O'Bama's foreign policy is very much like GW's. Look at the M.E. now. I don't see how O'Bama or Hillary can talk about her experience with a straight face.

I think you are misguided about some of your criticism of GOP policies--mainly economic policies, though you raise very sound criticisms, particularly regarding foreign policy, IMO.

However, no US policy has led to more suffering and death than that of abortion on demand. And now the Dems want the US tax payers to even fund it. They are also working to erode religious freedom. If they have their way, Catholic hospitals will be performing abortions. I won't be complicit to that.

The question asked of Trump does not accurately reflect the GOP platform.

Where in the GOP platform does it say that there is no exception for the life of the mother?

Read the link I provided to the GOP platform and tell me if you can agree with the statement as it is given there. If not, what do you disagree with.

The "no exceptions" abortion plank has been a topic of discussion the past few presidential elections. I thought it was common knowledge that this was the GOP's official stance.

From the 2012 platform:

Faithful to the "self-evident" truths enshrined in the Declaration of Independence, we assert the sanctity of human life and affirm that the unborn child has a fundamental individual right to life which cannot be infringed.
