I'm so glad I spent $ to send my kid to two of his camps!

Sending your kid to a top D1 programs camp is a waste of money unless you think your kid has D1 level potential.

What do the kids get at the camp? I'm assuming a tshirt is basically what the camp fee is for.

Total money grab. They already know who they are going to keep an eye on during these camps. There are very few kids that just show up that the coaches will really take notice of. All they want is your $250 sign up fee. You will get a $10 tee shirt though.

To Ohio State yes they're overrated, but to Mid Majors and the FCS teams that attend the OSU camp, could benefit some kids that might slip through the cracks.

You are either good enough to go to college on a full athletic scholarship or you aren't. If you are, it will show up on film. If you aren't, you can go to a school where you will be on the team and pay to attend. Going to camps doesn't really matter.

Also, the reason the colleges have these camps is not to find new recruits. They do it to get face time with guys they have already identified. 95% of the campers are there to subsidize the cost of the camp and give it a sheen of legitimacy as if they are performing a community service. If you don't believe this, go and watch who the college coaches speak to. They only talk to recruits that they have already identified. There isn't anything wrong with this (it doesn't hurt anyone), but thinking these camps are a way to "get discovered" or "earn a scholarship" is misguided.

That's about the dumbest statement I've ever heard from a DI football coach. How can you put trust into every HS Coaches word, when more than often the HS Coach has his own agenda and it's not to get kids into college level football. I've seen HS coaches sweep kids under the rug in order to promote a kid form a friendship with the parents or because the kid has relatives in college coaching positions. Not" every" HS Coach and HS Player have Kosher relationships, and the coach just may not have anything good to say about the player because he can't swallow his own ego. Yet that player still performs for that coach at a top level athletically. Maybe Urban could start talking to the teachers, pastors and community leaders about his recruits. Thanks for the heads up Urb, we'll save our money and not attend any camps you host.

It’s real simple. Don’t complicate things.

 

I like this comment from the article, but what if you have a HS Coach that has the communication skills of a 2 ton rock, Or lacks the effort/time to aggressively contact coaches on behalf of the student athletes? That's how some very good athletes get missed over and must attend camps just to promote themselves.

Also I don't consider it blowing 80 bucks. If you're running a football camp and not and audition stage, you should also be teaching skills that benefit the athletes.

I think this is a good point. This is why it's so important, unless a kid is a obviously D1, to go to a school with a good football program. C
