Maybe, maybe not. Spence and Mauk have come to EKU under different coaching staffs so it could just be coincidental. I think a decent number of I-AA schools are often willing to roll the dice with a kid who has issues at D-I.

Agreed. It's more of a 1-AA thing than an EKU thing.

If Mauk does what Spence did, as far as submitting above the required random drug tests, no issue with him at EKU.

Is defiantly a 1-AA thing. When Louisiana Tech(my alma mater) made the jump up to the D1 level years ago, we brought in some real suspect characters to jump start the program. I remember we had two that had left(or got booted) the University of Miami (when the program was in its heyday) and we took them in. Everybody knew they wouldn't last more then a year or so, which they didn't, but it made us more competitive in ability and size. Sometimes the small ones have to take a chance to get a foot print in the sand.

There are a bunch of 1-AA schools though. I am a little confused at the allure of EKU. Its a great school and all, I am not saying anything to the contrary, but I just find it hard to believe that there aren't other more desirable and recognizable schools out there than a 1-AA school in Richmond, KY.

Looks like the QB battle at EKU will be pretty hot this summer. I'm not a fan of the decision to bring a (character questionable) player into a rebuilding program especially at a position that should lead the team. But, no one is perfect, so maybe Mauk will be a quick positive spark for the programs future.

There won't be a QB battle. If Mauk is there and does the bare minimum to remain eligible, he's head and shoulders better than anyone on the roster.

 

As far as FCS schools, EKU has a great history of winning championships, was in the playoffs recently and it's not a horrible drive for a kid from central OH.

Relationships. In Spence's case it was the relationship between Urban and the EKU coach.

Yes, he has his young recruits established. The next year or 2 is the current decision. If I'm not mistaking, there were a total 6 qb's slated for this upcoming season and that includes the 2 incoming signees. The 5th year kid Boyle from UCONN looked to have a very strong arm at the spring game. Mauk carried a low 50% completion rate MU which should improve at the FCS level. But I'm sure Bennie and Boyle won't concede the job easily.
