I hope everyone who has windows 10 didn't run into the problem I did. It seems that Microsoft put out an update that wasn't fully bug free. Its effect was supposed to be limited to a few computers. Of course my laptop happened to be one. :banghead: My laptop crashed and I'm having to take it to get it fixed. Nothing worked for me. I had the same problem in safe mode that I had in regular start up. Wouldn't let me refresh, reformat or restore. sfc /scannow nor dism don't work either.

 

My wife's laptop had no problems.

I had the same issue. Since I did not have much un-backed up data on the laptop, I re-imaged the computer from a back up disk. So, in effect I have the computer back as it was brand new. I also made my WIFI a metered connection which is the only thing that I have been able to find which will allow you to turn off the auto updates with Windows 10. I am honestly am not yet sure this works, but I can say that I have not had any updates take place since I did this. That's the one thing I hate about 10, not being able to easily turn off auto updates.

Few weeks ago I was away from my laptop for a while, but had the machine on. Windows 10 automatically installed itself onto the computer & it was a disaster. Took it off as soon as I realized how it could be done.

Microsoft has been up to no good with this one. I don't want 10 and Microsoft keeps trying to force feed it to me. And now they are using sales tactics.

 

Anyone, how can you uninstall the "advertisement" Microsoft has planted in the lower, right taskbar?

They are relentless in trying to get me to upgrade to it. I did once, it was terrible, I uninstalled it and will not install it again!

I bought a new laptop, and it came with it. Other than the auto updates, I have no real complaints about W10. And, like I said, since marking my WIFI as metered I have not had any updates without me knowing it so I may have taken care of that issue. Now I know I also spent way more time setting W10 up as there are so many more settings about syncing, cloud, etc. Way more than I expected. Other than that though, it is not too bad.

 

I agree though about how pushy they are with it though. My older machines I always seem to bet getting requests for Windows and IE updates Since I hate IE and use almost exclusively Chrome I can ignore those too!

 

And it is way better than 8......

Took to the shop could cost anywhere from $100 to over $200. I'm really thinking about seeing if they can just save my documents and other stuff on the laptop and just buy a new one. Just in case this happens to my wife's I've already back everything up from hers on my portable hard drive. Wish I had thought to do the other one. :facepalm:

Easiest way to get rid of the pop-up is to upgrade. I don't knot why anyone wouldn't. Windows 10 is absolutely phenomenal to work on. It's lightening fast. Easy to use and completely customizable.

 

If you really don't want to upgrade and you want to get rid of the pop up there are a quite a few free little utilities out there that will disable it.

I have upgraded at least 250-300 computers to Windows 10 and have not had one issue with any of them.

 

None that were Windows 10 related at least.

I'm not saying you're wrong but I manage around 3000 workstations spread out over 10 to 20 companies, approximately 20 to 25% of those are Windows 10 and I've not seen the issues that you're having

Typically when a patch comes out that's bad I get notified by Microsoft or by one of the number of other IT groups that I belong to that there's an issue with something

All I know is with the update before this last one my laptop started running slower. Then with this one it stopped working completely. I had just scanned it for viruses and malware earlier in the week. Also it worked fine Thursday evening. The Friday morning after the update it crashed.

Well finally found out what was wrong. Looks like it wasn't the update but the hard drive went bad.
