Arizona college imposes fee to fund scholarship for illegal immigrants

Featured Replies

Private school, they can do what they want. I don't necessarily agree with it, but then again I wouldn't agree with paying $28,000 a year in tuition either.

Article also says you can opt out of the "fee"...

The fee which was recommended and approved by students and faculty.

Is this really news??

Not in the slightest...Much ado about nothing. It basically equates to an optional donation to a specific scholarship fund.

While students can opt out of paying the fee, if they do nothing it will be automatically imposed.

It's not like they ask the student, only If student knows about it ad if they don't pay attention then they lose the 30 dollars

So how does an illegal go here for free, jus was does illegal mean?

Would Mexico do this for an illegal from America

This isn't the government or the USA giving the scholarship. It's a private university. And isn't this a good way to provide a path for citizenship?? I would think this scholarship might go to the type of person we want in our country. Again, the person who gets this scholarship, is just another instance of someone trying to improve their lot in life, trying to create a future for themselves. But no, it's better to squash that dream isn't it?? No chance this person could ever be a contributor to our society, right??

As far as the University trying to sneak the fee by, or some poor unknowing college kid losing $30 (which isn't a big chunk of the $30k it costs to go there), do we not think our kids are smart enough to read their tuition bill? And maybe this helps get them started on being charitable.

I didn't read the article. I agree that this is a private entity and it's not affecting me directly so I have no issue.

Another side also could be an American business is promoting someone to attend who is breaking the law. If they are truly only targeting illegal immigrants.

Which means they are knowingly harboring an illegal immigrant. I take issue with businesses in the private sector who do the same , so I have to be consistent here as well.

The article says it is legal for undocumented students to attend public or private schools in Arizona, but that they may not receive any government grants or loans.

In my best Charles Barkley voice.

"Turrible. That's just turrible."

They are still here illegally under federal law. Let's say the private university denies an American citizen admission over a student who is breaking American laws. Offers aid to an illegal immigrant over an American citizen.

Again I'm not losing sleep over it but I understand where an uproar is coming from. If a private business hires illegal immigrants over an American citizen there would uproar and I find this similar.

How many of the students applying for this are here illegally through their own doing or fault? I'd venture very few. If they're parents brought them over here illegally when they were very young, are they really breaking the law, or is it the parents who broke the law?

Just some food for thought. :idunno:

What people do with their money is their own business. I'm guessing that they are more interested in doing good with the scholarship, and less interested in whether or not they'll make the rest of us mad.
