Mike Williams working out for Bengals this week

Featured Replies

You may remember Mike Williams from when he was a young, up-and-coming star for the Buccaneers. His career took a bad turn though that led to him quickly falling out of favor in the NFL, so now the Bengals may be trying to revive his career.

However, injuries, off-field issues and a trade to the Buffalo Bills led to him catching just 30 passes for 358 yards and three scores of his last 15 games from 2013-14. They weren't egregious criminal issues off the field (he was stabbed by his own brother), but they did include a three-game suspension in 2015 by the NFL for an undisclosed reason.

At least the Bengals are leaving no stone unturned.

I'm curious, what do you think of Anquan Boldin? To me, he's a veteran guy that'd be good to have around for the younger guys (draft pick/etc.) as well as even AJ. I know he doesn't have the flat line speed like he used to, but I think he'd be another TJ Houshmandzadeh...good hands, runs good routes, reliable. Who cares if he's not going to be playing in another 2-3 years?

I'd have rather the Bengals ponied up some bigger money to get him than LaFell and Williams combined. But, that's just my opinion, and I may be proven wrong by the end of the year.

Only in a bind.

I think he was a great player that is a couple of levels past his prime.

He's not going to catch you 100 balls, no. But he still caught 69 passes for the 49'ers in that train-wreck of an offense last year.

I saw that.

Who knows, I am sure like most Vet NFL decisions, it depends on the price.

Either way, I am still thinking only as a last resort.

I can speak for myself. I tend to get caught up in the names of some of these players being considered and think of them when they were in their prime. Call it "Laveranues Coles" thinking. I forget that the window of success and dominance for most players in the NFL is short and then many have a severe drop-off in production at specific points of their careers. That's why they want all that guaranteed money upfront. Stay young, Bengals, stay young.

I'd take Boldin, have plenty of faith he could make a few big plays in a limited role.
