March 21, 201610 yr ...Craftsman. Mack daddy of a mower, paid a mack daddy price too. 7.25 B&S "quiet tech" engine (supposed to be much quieter than any similar type engine on the market), rear bagger/mulcher, deck wash spout, one lever easy touch wheel adjustment (one lever adjusts all 4 wheels), variable speed rear wheel drive. Brand new design...evidently there are a lot of stores that don't even have them yet or are out of them, and this one only had one, it was on the floor. $400.:scared: Didn't go in planning to spend that much, but heck a good push mower today is easily $200+, one I was looking at was $236 (before tax). Got to looking at this one and really liked it, so figured what the heck. Plus, with the rear wheel drive the little lady can more easily get out and cut the grass if she needs to. I will be away some this summer for work and she may need to cut the grass while am gone. Thought about going the used route and getting something cheap, but did that last year for one of the girls. Mower didn't last long enough to pee on and didn't cut the grass worth a crud when it did run. Taking care of this one hopefully it will last a good while.
March 21, 201610 yr Kinda funny, I waited til a can't pass it up deal showed up on Craigslist for a rider I liked. It was on 2 hours and I bought it. Had to drive all the way to Columbia to get it, but couldn't be happier. Paid 900 for a 3000 mower. Can't believe you didn't shop CL too.

My experience on Craig's list has been less than exemplary lets just say. Wanted something good, needed it, so what the heck. The used mower I mentioned above? Craig's list. Paid a little more than I originally was going to, but then again got more than I was going to originally get too. Might could have found a good deal on Craig's list maybe, but would have probably had to do it back in the winter, doubt could find one on a mower now. And with what I paid the kid to mow my grass last year, I could have bought this mower plus a good weed eater. Every time I use it, I can just tell myself "there's $25.00 you didn't spend". Will have paid for itself by August. That a positive way to look at it.:thumb:

Wish you would have asked BGP first, we could have steered you way from this purchase. Craftsmans are junk.
March 21, 201610 yr For a second I thought we were talking about a reel mower. I was about to advise agaonst it, but never mind.
March 22, 201610 yr For a second I thought we were talking about a reel mower. I was about to advise agaonst it, but never mind. I almost bought a reel mower this weekend. In the end I decided on an electric mower. I still may buy a reel mower as well though.

March 22, 201610 yr What's wrong with Reel mowers? I'd love to use only a reel mower. I didn't choose that option (yet) because I haven't yet had the opportunity to deal with my yard, since I moved in in November. My back yard is the perfect size to handle with a reel mower, but is a mess. It was a construction zone most recently, and apparently before that, over grown mess. I'm tackling it right now with a weed eater. The front yard is in good shape, but has two steep slopes that I'm thinking I'll need something a bit easier to use than the reel mower to ensure they look nice. Who knows...in the end, I'm just hoping the neighbors don't hate me for an unkempt lawn. :lol2:
March 22, 201610 yr To be honest I love reel mowers. I have a lawn care business and it's not feasible for us to use them on most lawns. But they're great mowers as long as you have a small lawn.

And keep the blades sharp. I had a postage stamp sized yard when I lived in Philly. When we bought the house, a reel mower was left by the original owner. My great Uncle showed me how to sharpen the blades, and that mower worked like a charm.

Sharpening the blades on a reel mower can be a pain, but as long as they're sharp they're one of the best mowers you will find. That goes against my entire business plan, but I'm not gonna lie to you guys.

And if it is relatively flat. My yard is nothing of the sort. I ended up warping the handle from all the force I had to put into it when I got it. I wanted one because I never liked the gas powered one my parents had as a kid but after trying it in my yard I definitely was not a fan.

They do work best on flat lawns, but they can be used on sloped lawns as well. However when you get over a certain size lawn or a steep slope, it makes no sense to use them. They can be used on steep slopes, but it makes no sense to do so commercially. To be honest we only use them on a handful of lawns and those have primarily bermuda for their primary grass. It just doesn't work out for us time wise to use them on a regular basis. But I do use one at my own lawn and it gives a better cut than most gas mowers do.

The bumps, divots and such that are in my yard make it darn near impossible and I don't care nearly enough about my lawn to resod it to make it perfectly level.

About 10 years ago, I worked for a business that sold mowers. And I was surprised at the number of reel mowers we sold. I agree they are only good for certain situations, and in if the situation is right, I would recommend one over electric mowers (which are a popular choice). They really do give a nice, clean cut, which helps prevent a lot of problems in your lawn.
