March 22, 201610 yr Author Wish you would have asked BGP first, we could have steered you way from this purchase. Craftsmans are junk. Did my research last fall when I first started looking at getting one...found reviews as good on this model mower as any (well, model close to it, this is a brand new model from Craftsman with a new engine). There is a generic Craftsman engine that is not a B&S that they use on some of their mowers that supposedly is made in China. Those are sketchy and reviews say stay away from. I think this one will be more than adequate.
March 22, 201610 yr Author About 10 years ago, I worked for a business that sold mowers. And I was surprised at the number of reel mowers we sold. I agree they are only good for certain situations, and in if the situation is right, I would recommend one over electric mowers (which are a popular choice). They really do give a nice, clean cut, which helps prevent a lot of problems in your lawn. The cutting form of the reel mower makes a cleaner cut over a gas powered rotoray blade. Reel blades cut the grass similar to a pair of scissors cutting hair. It's a cleaner cut and actually healthier for the grass. Rotary blades essentially "beat" the tops of the grass off, even a really sharp blade. However, non-powered reel mowers need flat surfaces, healthy grass that's not too thick or too tall, and no weeds to work efficiently. I know, I had one and used it on my current yard sometimes, but it just didn't do the job I needed doing.
March 22, 201610 yr When I was younger dad would not let me cut the grass. Uncle Bob had lost a few toes with a gas mower so dad only used a reel mower for the longest time. When he got the gas he was still hesitant to let me use it.

March 22, 201610 yr I need to look into getting a new mower. I got a push one from my dad last year when I bought my house but it doesn't have a mulching attachment so I have to bag the entire yard. I'm not a fan of that so as a result a buddy of mine cut it all last year with his stand behind. I'm not sure he'll do it again this year. My yard isn't large by any means but it is a corner lot so it's larger than most in the area. I thought about a rider but can't decide. It would make it much quicker for the times of the year where I don't have a ton of free time to be mowing.

March 22, 201610 yr Got a flyer on my door....$30 to cut the entire estate. Told the kids they can either start mowing or come up with $30 a week to pay the service. This old guy is retiring from lawn care.
