New Illinois AD fires football coach

Featured Replies

Hopefully Illinois can find someone who can bring a lot of positive momentum.

Timing seems strange, even with a new AD. Especially with one less than 3 weeks on the job.

Have to believe he already has a replacement.

I've heard from some folks in Champaign that he will be announcing the new coach next week.

Almost seems like it would have to be an NFL guy at this point.

Whole lot of rumbling right now that it is Lovie Smith.

I'm not buying in yet.

Pending HR paperwork, nice hire!

Lovie Smith would be a great hire, but....

The way athletic director Josh Whitman handled this one (I understand the players learned of their head coaches dismissal via social media) has a lot to be desired.

I really like Lovie, but he better be watching his back working for this guy. That is if he takes the job.

How is it different from how they treated him in Tampa Bay?

I have no issue with how this was handled. New AD wants his guy. First day on the job.

It's not like the fired coach doesn't get paid. He has 2 years on his contract. Life as a college coach. That program has gotten stale. Lovie brings some energy to the program. Good move.

Let me ask this, New AD at Duke, fires coach K because hes not his guy, still ok with it?

Not the same. He's not firing an established name.

Does a coach not have the opportunity to tell his players?

Hearing everything on social media is the new proper way of communicating? I personally think not.

Great hire should make the Big Ten more competitive.

If we're going to play fantasy "what if's...." I guess I'll say "yes" since he's the boss.
