February 5, 201610 yr Reds hire Lou Piniella as senior advisor to baseball operations The Reds announced Friday they have hired former manager Lou Piniella to serve in a consulting capacity as a senior advisor to baseball operations. Piniella is expected to spend some time with the team in spring training, according to the team's announcement. Piniella managed the Reds from 1990 - when he led the team to its most recent World Series title - to 1992. He managed the Yankees in 1986 and 1987, and again in 1988. Since managing the Reds, he has managed the Mariners (1993-2002), the Devil Rays (2003-2005) and the Cubs (2007-2010). In three seasons as the Reds' manager, Piniella was 255-231. In 23 seasons as a manager, his record was 1835-1713. The pennant and World Series title he won in Cincinnati were the only ones he won as a manager. In 2011, Piniella served as a special consultant for the San Francisco Giants. In 18 seasons as a player, including 11 with the Yankees, Piniella hit .291. He won the American League Rookie of the Year award as a Royal in 1969. He was an All-Star with Kansas City in 1972.

Toward the end of his managing career he looked like he was lost in the dugout tossing a ball in the air at times and his post game interviews were somewhat sad to watch. Maybe he was just tired of it all and has been rejuvenated. I certainly hope so as I loved his style.

February 8, 201610 yr I thought he was loaded for a few years in Seattle (except for average SP) and won nothing. The Rays got better right after he left. He had one good year with the Cubs. How good was he really? He took almost the same wire-to-wire team in 90 to a losing record in 91. When looking at the entire body of work, outside of 1990, I would take Dusty Baker over him; as a player and as a manager.
