The only unanswered questions remain will the KHSAA offer the smallest teams in those classes affected the opportunity to play down to replace the teams leaving? They have done this in the past, but being a mid-alignment shift like this I doubt they will.

 

The net effect of all this is 1A and 2A are losing 1 team each, 3A and 4A are static, 5A and 6A each gain 1 team. I don't think that requires any special adjustments, especially when you consider that each district affected will now have at least 4 teams in it, which helps playoff alignments.

I thought that the brain trust that gave us 6 classes mandated that 6A would always be the 32 largest schools based on male enrollment. Does this now mean there will be 33 6A schools or will #33 drop to 5A?

 

What about the playoffs? In the quest for the ever elusive participation award we currently have all 32 6A teams in the playoffs, so that those teams that were awful during the regular season could get their self confidence beaten down one more time, usually after a long bus ride. If there are now 33 6A teams does that mean we will now irrevocably destroy the psyche of 1 poor, unfortunate team and leave them out of the playoffs?

I noticed there was no mention of the new Scott County school in the KHSAA release. Are they still planning to play as one school?

I have no idea if the KHSAA will work to try and keep 1A and 6A at 32 teams or not. If they want to do that, then I guess they will offer the smallest 6A school the opportunity to drop to 5A, and then it will domino from there.

 

I think having 33 teams in 6A is less of a problem than having 31 in 1A.

A follow-up. If we are indeed going to keep 1 terrible team from making the playoffs in 6A how will that team be determined? There are currently 3 3 team districts and 3 5 team districts so it kind-of works. Add a 4th 5 team district and what happens?

 

If they decide to keep 6A at 32 teams who exactly is the smallest school in 6A? Would it be the smallest actual 6A school or one of the NKY schools that's playing up? If it's the latter would you then have a 2 team NKY district and the bottom teams from 2 districts would fill the slots?

I don't believe they will do anything. There were 33 teams in 1A this year. I suspect they'll keep 33 in 6A for two years and then do a complete realignment after the 2018 season.

There is already a procedure for playoff qualification for those two 5-team districts from Louisville and the three 3-team districts (E'town/Northern Kentucky). I'm guessing the fifth place team in the Lexington district would just miss the playoffs, just as the fifth place team in 1A-District 5 (Berea) did last season.

Seeing how both Allen Central and South Floyd have declining enrollments, I could see Floyd Central asking to play in 2A. If they do end up in 3A, I suspect they'll drop to 2A with the next full-scale alignment.
